Overview

The Johnford SL-70A-2S moves the twin-spindle idea onto the large SL bed. Swing over the bed is Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in), swing over the cross slide Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in), and the two spindles are up to 1,400 mm (55.1 in) apart.

It weighs 14,000 kg (30,800 lb), nearly twice the 7,800 kg (17,160 lb) of the SL-60A-2S, while the spindles themselves stay as they were. Main: 12 in chuck, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), 2 step automatic transmission, 3,000 rpm. Sub: 8 in chuck, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), 4,500 rpm. The gain is in the structure and in the space around the part.

That space shows in three rows. X travel is 295 mm (11.6 in). The Y-axis, where fitted, has ±50 mm (±2 in) and a 3.8 kW servo motor, where the SL-60A-2S has ±40 mm (±1.6 in). And the table lists a single swing over the cross slide, Ø540 mm, with no reduced figure for the Y-axis version.

Parts that call for it combine a large diameter with length: rotor shafts with a wide body, long flanged spindles, big valve stems with a head, rollers with stub ends machined after the body. One end is driven by the main chuck; the other is taken by the sub-spindle for the second operation.

Rapids are lower than on the medium bed, 12 / 10 / 15 / 15 m/min (472 / 394 / 591 / 591 ipm). The machine is 6,800 mm (267.7 in) long and 2,520 x 2,200 mm (99.2 x 86.6 in) in section.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) swing over the cross slide on a twin-spindle lathe
  • 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z1/Z2 travel
  • Y-axis version with ±50 mm (±2 in) of travel and a 3.8 kW Y servo motor
  • 14,000 kg (30,800 lb) machine weight
  • 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) geared main spindle

Limitations

  • Sub-spindle remains an 8 in, Ø51 mm (Ø2 in) bar unit on this larger bed
  • Rapids of 12 / 10 / 15 / 15 m/min (472 / 394 / 591 / 591 ipm)
  • Machine length of 6,800 mm (267.7 in)
  • No tailstock; long parts rely on the sub-spindle or a steady rest
06

Best For

Rotor shafts and flanged spindles with a large body Large-diameter parts needing second-side work without re-handling Complete machining with the optional ±50 mm (±2 in) Y-axis

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What swing and travel does the SL-70A-2S have?

Swing over bed Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in), swing over cross slide Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in), X travel 295 mm (11.6 in) and Z1/Z2 travel 1,400 mm (55.1 in).

02 Are the SL-70A-2S spindles bigger than those of the SL-60A-2S?

No. Both models list a 12 in main chuck with 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) and an 8 in sub-spindle with 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp). The SL-70A-2S has the larger bed, 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z and a weight of 14,000 kg (30,800 lb); the SL-60A-2S has 900 mm (35.4 in) of Z.

03 What Y-axis does the SL-70A-2S offer?

The table gives ±50 mm (±2 in) of Y travel, a Y rapid of 10 m/min (394 ipm), a 3.8 kW Y servo motor and a 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp) power turret motor. The accessory list shows the C+Y axis and live tool turret as options.

04 How does the SL-70A-2S relate to the SL-70A?

The SL-70A is the tailstock version of the same bed, with 1,550 mm (61 in) of Z travel and a programmable hydraulic tailstock. Both weigh 14,000 kg (30,800 lb).
