Overview

A 15 in chuck, a Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore and just over a metre between centres: the Johnford SL-60B is the big-bore spindle of the medium SL series on the 1,040 mm (40.9 in) bed.

On the short SL-50B that spindle is mostly an end-working tool for stock fed through the bore. One metre of Z widens the use. A tube or thick-walled sleeve of several hundred millimetres can now be turned along its length with tailstock or steady support; a long hollow shaft can be gripped on its outside diameter and bored; a part can be passed through the Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) bar capacity and machined section by section.

Industries with this kind of work include oil and gas (subs, sleeves, mandrels), hydraulics (cylinder tubes, large rods) and general tube processing. The spindle runs at up to 2,000 rpm on a Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in) bearing with an A2-11 nose, and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) reaches it through a 2 step automatic transmission.

The frame is the common one: Ø580 mm (Ø22.8 in) swing over the bed, Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in) over the cross slide, 250 mm (9.8 in) of X, a 45° bed. Tailstock travel is 900 mm (35.4 in) and its quill is Ø85 mm (Ø3.3 in). At 9,500 kg (20,900 lb), this is the heaviest of the three SL-60 versions. High pressure coolant through the turret at 20 bar or above is an option worth a look for deep boring.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the bore and bar capacity of the SL-60B?

The spindle bore is Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) and the bar capacity Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in). The chuck size is 15 in on an A2-11 spindle nose.

02 How fast does the SL-60B spindle turn?

Up to 2,000 rpm, driven by a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor through a 2 step Auto transmission. The SL-60A, with a smaller Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore, is listed at 3,000 rpm.

03 How long a part fits in the SL-60B?

Z travel is 1,040 mm (40.9 in), or 940 mm (37 in) with the Y-axis, and tailstock travel is 900 mm (35.4 in). Longer stock can pass through the spindle bore.

04 What separates the SL-60B from the SL-65B?

Bed length. The SL-65B has 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of Z, 1,300 mm (51.1 in) of tailstock travel and weighs 11,500 kg (25,300 lb). The SL-60B has 1,040 mm (40.9 in) of Z and weighs 9,500 kg (20,900 lb).
