Overview

Two Johnford lathes share the A2-11 spindle and the 920 mm (36.2 in) swing but differ in almost everything along the bed: the Johnford ST-70BH, with 1,600 mm (63 in) of Z travel, and the ST-80B with 2,000 mm (78.7 in).

The ST-70BH is the quicker machine. Rapid traverse is 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z, where the ST-80B manages 10 m/min and 12 m/min. It is also far lighter, 13,300 kg (29,260 lb) against 15,000 kg (33,000 lb) for the ST-80B, and shorter at 6,482 mm (255.2 in).

The ST-80B answers with its tailstock, whose quill is Ø200 mm (7.9 in) with an MT#7 taper; the quill here is Ø125 mm (4.9 in) with MT#5 and 125 mm (4.9 in) of travel. For a heavy shaft the larger center matters more than rapid speed. For lighter shafts of up to 1,600 mm (63 in), the ST-70BH does the same turning in less time and less floor.

Both have 7 kW axis motors, 370 mm (14.6 in) of X travel and the same spindle: 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity, 2,000 rpm, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) or optionally 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Should a shop choose the ST-70BH or the ST-80B?

The ST-70BH for speed and footprint, the ST-80B for length and heavy shafts. The ST-80B has 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel and a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill but rapids of 10 m/min and 12 m/min, and weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lb).

02 What are the rapid traverse rates of the ST-70BH?

15 m/min on X, 18 m/min on Z and 10 m/min on the optional Y axis. The X and Z servo motors are 7 kW each, and the optional Y-axis motor is 3 kW.

03 What spindle is fitted to the ST-70BH?

The B spindle with an A2-11 nose, 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 180 mm (7.1 in) bearing diameter and four automatic speeds to 2,000 rpm. The standard chuck is 381 mm (15 in).

04 How big is the ST-70BH?

6,482 x 2,290 x 2,765 mm (255.2 x 90.2 x 108.9 in), with a weight of 13,300 kg (29,260 lb). The bed is inclined at 60°.
