Overview

The Johnford SL-60 is the middle bed length of the medium SL series with the base spindle: 1,040 mm (40.9 in) of Z travel behind a 10 in chuck. With the Y-axis fitted, Z is 940 mm (37 in).

A metre of travel on a geared, 45° bed machine is the configuration many job shops settle on, because it does not force a choice. Chuck work fits. So do shafts up to about a metre, held between the chuck and a tailstock that travels 900 mm (35.4 in) and carries an Ø85 mm (Ø3.3 in) quill with an MT#5 centre.

The spindle is the SL-50's: A2-8 nose, Ø86 mm (Ø3.4 in) bore for Ø76.5 mm (Ø3 in) bar, 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp), 2 step automatic transmission, 3,500 rpm. Johnford's lighter one-metre lathe, the SL-40L, turns faster at 4,000 rpm but has a one step drive and a Ø60 mm (Ø2.4 in) quill. The difference in build shows in the weight, 8,500 kg (18,700 lb) here against 5,500 kg (12,100 lb) for the SL-40L.

One detail for the order: the accessory list names the sizes that get a programmable hydraulic tailstock as standard and the sizes that get a hydraulic quill, and the SL-60 appears in neither list. Ask which tailstock the quoted machine has.

The machine is 4,645 mm (182.9 in) long and 2,320 x 2,060 mm (91.3 x 81.1 in) in section.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the Z travel of the SL-60?

1,040 mm (40.9 in), or 940 mm (37 in) with the Y-axis. Tailstock travel is 900 mm (35.4 in), or 800 mm (31.5 in) with the Y-axis.

02 How does the SL-60 compare with the SL-40L?

Both have a 10 in chuck and about a metre of Z. The SL-40L has a 30° saddle, a one step 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) drive at 4,000 rpm and weighs 5,500 kg (12,100 lb). The SL-60 has a 45° bed, a 2 step 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) drive at 3,500 rpm and weighs 8,500 kg (18,700 lb).

03 Which versions of the SL-60 are there?

Three. The SL-60 has the 10 in chuck, the SL-60A a 12 in chuck with Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), and the SL-60B a 15 in chuck with Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) bar capacity at 2,000 rpm.

04 What turret does the SL-60 have?

A 12-position direct-mount non-driven turret with one set of turning tool holders is standard. A live tool turret in BMT or VDI is optional; the table lists a 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp) power turret motor for it.
