Overview

The Johnford SL-60A combines the 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) A spindle with the one-metre bed: a 12 in chuck, Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity and 1,040 mm (40.9 in) of Z travel.

Its typical part is a heavy shaft. Think of gearbox shafts, axle shafts, large pump rotors or rolls, forged with generous stock and turned from the rough. The work needs power to remove that stock and a tailstock to hold against it. Here the motor drives through a 2 step automatic gearbox to a spindle on a Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) bearing, and the tailstock offers 900 mm (35.4 in) of travel with an Ø85 mm (Ø3.3 in) quill and an MT#5 centre.

The spindle bore of Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) also lets long stock pass through. Bar capacity can be raised to Ø102 mm (Ø4 in) as an option, with the A2-11 nose in place of the standard A2-8.

Speed is 3,000 rpm, or 2,800 rpm as the optional figure. X travel is 250 mm (9.8 in) and the swing over the cross slide Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in), no more than on the short SL-50A, so the gain over that model is length alone: 1,040 mm of Z against 650 mm (25.6 in) on the SL-50A.

Johnford-made manual steady rests and hydraulic steady rests are listed as options and belong in the quotation for slender work. The machine weighs 9,000 kg (19,800 lb) and is 4,645 mm (182.9 in) long.
