Overview

The Johnford HT-35-2D takes the twin-turret layout of the small HT frame out to 800 mm (31.5 in) between centers. Z1/Z2 travel is 760 mm (30 in) and the tailstock travels 740 mm (29.1 in).

Everything at the headstock end matches the shorter HT-30-2D: a Ø254 mm (10 in) chuck, an A2-8 nose, a Ø86 mm (3.4 in) bore and 3,500 rpm from a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) one-step drive. What differs is the casting under it. This machine weighs 11,000 kg (24,200 lb), the HT-30-2D 7,200 kg (15,840 lb), a much larger step than the extra length alone would suggest.

Shaft work is where the added length pays. A part held between chuck and the MT#5 rotary quill can have its two ends turned by the two turrets in the same pass, each carriage staying on its own half. Each turret has 12 stations and 175 mm (6.9 in) of cross travel; swing over the cross slide is Ø330 mm (13 in).

Bar up to Ø76.5 mm (3 in) passes through the spindle, and a bar feeder interface and parts catcher are options. Turrets are direct-mount and non-driven as supplied. The live tool turret, the C-axis and a Y axis on the upper turret are extras, and so are steady rests.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 mm (31.5 in) between centers with two turrets
  • 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) machine weight for a 10 in lathe
  • Tailstock travel of 740 mm (29.1 in) with an MT#5 rotary quill
  • 3 kW X-axis and 4 kW Z-axis servo motors on each carriage
  • Ø76.5 mm (3 in) bar capacity

Limitations

  • Quill diameter is Ø85 mm (3.3 in), small beside the Ø200 mm (7.9 in) quill of the HT-40-2D
  • Spindle speed stops at 3,500 rpm
  • 5,600 mm (220.5 in) long for 760 mm (30 in) of Z travel
  • Live tools, C-axis and Y axis are options

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the Z travel of the HT-35-2D?

760 mm (30 in) on Z1/Z2, with 800 mm (31.5 in) between centers. The tailstock body travels 740 mm (29.1 in) and its quill a further 100 mm (3.9 in).

02 Do both turrets of the HT-35-2D have the same travel?

Yes. The table gives 175 / 175 mm (6.9 / 6.9 in) for the X1 and X2 axes and 12 / 12 tool stations. Each X axis has a 3 kW servo motor and each Z axis a 4 kW servo motor.

03 Why is the HT-35-2D so much heavier than the HT-30-2D?

Johnford's table lists 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) for the HT-35-2D and 7,200 kg (15,840 lb) for the HT-30-2D without giving a reason. The figures show the two do not share a base: the HT-35-2D is 5,600 mm (220.5 in) long and the HT-30-2D 5,100 mm (200.8 in).

04 Which accessories come with the HT-35-2D?

A through hole 3-jaw chuck with hard and soft jaws, the twin-turret system with two sets of turning tool holders, a programmable hydraulic tailstock, a chain type chip conveyor with trolley, a 4 bar external coolant supply and a full enclosure with interlocks.
