Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford ST-40AX that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
On the Johnford ST-40AX the swing over the cross slide, 800 mm (31.5 in), equals the Z travel, 800 mm (31.5 in). It is the widest and shortest working envelope of the ST lathes with the fast A spindle, and swing over the bed reaches 1,020 mm (40.2 in).
No standard chuck fills that space. The A spindle carries a 304 mm (12 in) chuck, or a 381 mm (15 in) one as an option, on an A2-8 nose. The room above it is there for the part and its fixture: thin discs, covers, wheel-like parts and fabricated rings that are large across but light, clamped on a faceplate fixture or in extended jaws. At 3,000 rpm with the standard chuck the spindle is quick enough to finish aluminium at those diameters.
X travel is 420 mm (16.5 in), the longest of the short ST frames, so the turret can work from the center out to a large radius in one setup. Servo motors are 7 kW on X and Z.
Rapid traverse is 12 m/min on X and 16 m/min on Z, a little below the 15 m/min and 18 m/min of the ST-40AH. Power is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) through an Auto Hi-Lo transmission. The machine weighs 11,200 kg (24,640 lb).

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The largest of the three short frames. The ST-40A swings 600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide, the ST-40AH 700 mm (27.6 in) and the ST-40AX 800 mm (31.5 in). X travel rises with it, to 420 mm (16.5 in) on the ST-40AX.
02
A 304 mm (12 in) 3-jaw hydraulic through-hole chuck as standard, with a 381 mm (15 in) chuck as the option. Larger parts within the 800 mm (31.5 in) swing over the cross slide need their own workholding.
03
The spindle reaches 3,000 rpm with the 12 in chuck and 91 mm (3.6 in) bar capacity, and 2,500 rpm with the 15 in chuck. Rapid traverse is 12 m/min on X and 16 m/min on Z.
