Johnford SL-65B — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Johnford SL-65B that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Johnford or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

Top of the medium SL table, the Johnford SL-65B has the largest spindle and the longest bed together: a Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore, a 15 in chuck and 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of Z travel. It weighs 11,500 kg (25,300 lb).

Pipe and tube work is the clearest use. A length of pipe can be gripped in the chuck with its far end on the tailstock or in a steady, and threaded, bored or profiled over 1,500 mm. Longer pipe passes through the bore, which admits Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in), and is worked at the end. Drill collars, casing couplings, hydraulic cylinder barrels and roll shells are parts of this kind.

The spindle speed is 2,000 rpm and the motor 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) with a 2 step automatic transmission. The nose is A2-11 on a Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in) bearing.

One dimension is unique to this model. Its section is 2,250 x 2,510 mm (88.6 x 98.8 in), which is taller than the 2,250 x 2,160 mm (88.6 x 85 in) of the SL-65 and SL-65A. The page gives no reason, but anyone placing the machine under a mezzanine or a low crane should use the B figure.

As elsewhere in the series, the table's Y-axis rows, ±40 mm (±1.6 in) of travel and a 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp) power turret motor, describe options. The machine ships with a 12-position non-driven turret, a through hole 3-jaw chuck and a programmable hydraulic tailstock.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What can pass through the SL-65B spindle?

Bar or tube up to Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in); the bore itself is Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in). The chuck is 15 in on an A2-11 spindle nose.

02 Why is the SL-65B taller than the SL-65A?

The table lists 2,250 x 2,510 mm (88.6 x 98.8 in) for the SL-65B and 2,250 x 2,160 mm (88.6 x 85 in) for the SL-65A. The maker's page does not explain the difference; the length of 5,275 mm (207.7 in) is the same.

03 What are the travels of the SL-65B?

X 250 mm (9.8 in), Z 1,500 mm (59.1 in) or 1,400 mm (55.1 in) with the Y-axis, tailstock 1,300 mm (51.1 in). Rapid traverse is 15 / 10 / 18 m/min (591 / 394 / 709 ipm).

04 Is there a larger big-bore lathe than the SL-65B in the SL range?

The large-sized B models keep the same Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore on a bed with Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) of swing and a 4 step transmission, from the SL-70B with 1,550 mm (61 in) of Z to the SL-120B with 3,000 mm (118.1 in).
