Overview

The Fermat WFT 13/15 (R,L) is the large table-type horizontal boring mill in Fermat's range, built with a 130 or 150 mm (5.1/5.9 in) spindle and a rotary table that carries 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) as standard. One page covers the whole family. The figure in the name is the spindle size, R marks the version with a ram, and the rapid feed rows are split by guideway type.

The work envelope is chosen from a grid. Table cross travel in X is 2,000/3,000/4,000/5,000 mm (78.7/118.1/157.5/196.9 in), with 6,100/6,300 mm (240.2/248.0 in) optional on the 25-50T tables. The headstock travels 2,000/2,500/3,000/3,500 mm (78.7/98.4/118.1/137.8 in) in Y and the column 1,500/2,000/2,500/3,000 mm (59.1/78.7/98.4/118.1 in) in Z. Spindle travel is 800 mm (31.5 in). On the WFT R a ram adds a 700 mm (27.6 in) stroke in V, which carries milling heads closer to the work than the spindle quill alone.

The 130 mm spindle runs to 3,400 rpm (4,000 rpm optional) and the 150 mm spindle to 3,000 rpm (3,500 rpm optional), both on SK 50, BIG+ or HSK100. Heidenhain and Siemens machines get 41/61.5 kW or 53/77.9 kW (S1/S6) and up to 2,713/3,989 Nm. Fanuc machines start at 37/45 kW.

Rapid feed depends on the guideways: 12,000 mm/min (472.4 ipm) in X and Y on box ways, and 20,000 mm/min (787.4 ipm) in X on the linear versions. Table load options are 10,000, 25,000 and 50,000 kg.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) standard table load, with tables up to 50,000 kg listed as options
  • Wide envelope grid: X to 5,000 mm (196.9 in), or 6,100/6,300 mm (240.2/248.0 in) on the 25-50T tables, and Y to 3,500 mm (137.8 in)
  • Optional 700 mm (27.6 in) ram on the WFT R in addition to 800 mm (31.5 in) of spindle travel
  • Up to 53/77.9 kW (S1/S6) and 2,713/3,989 Nm at the spindle
  • Three pallet changer types, pick-up stations and an operator cabin on the accessory list

Limitations

  • On box guideways the rapid feed is 12,000 mm/min (472.4 ipm) in X and Y and 8,500 mm/min (334.6 ipm) in Z
  • The 150 mm spindle is limited to 3,000 rpm, or 3,500 rpm with the option
  • The ram is an option tied to the WFT R, so a standard machine reaches only with the 800 mm (31.5 in) spindle
  • Table rotation is 2 rpm, with 5 rpm optional

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What do R and L mean on the WFT 13/15?

The table ties R to the ram: the row for the V-axis ram stroke, 700 mm (27.6 in), is marked optional and for the WFT R. Fermat does not spell out the L on this page. On its smaller WFT 10/11 L it is the version with linear guideways, and the rapid feed rows here separate box guideways from two linear versions, Standard and Exclusive.

02 How fast are the axes of the WFT 13/15?

It depends on the guideways. On box ways X and Y rapid at 12,000 mm/min (472.4 ipm), Z at 8,500 mm/min (334.6 ipm) and W at 10,000 mm/min (393.7 ipm). The linear Standard row gives 20,000 and 15,000 mm/min for X and Y and 20,000 mm/min for Z; the Exclusive row gives 20,000 and 25,000 mm/min for X and Y and 25,000 mm/min for Z. The ram's V axis moves at 10,000 mm/min (393.7 ipm).

03 What table sizes and loads are available on the WFT 13/15?

The standard load is 20,000 kg (44,092 lb), with 10,000, 25,000 and 50,000 kg as options. T10 plates run from 1,200 x 1,200 mm to 1,600 x 1,800 mm, T20 plates from 1,600 x 1,800 mm to 2,000 x 3,000 mm, and T25-50 plates from 2,000 x 2,000 mm to 2,500 x 5,000 mm.

04 What spindle power does the WFT 13/15 offer?

With a Heidenhain or Siemens control, 41/61.5 kW or 53/77.9 kW (S1/S6), with torque of 2,099/3,149 Nm or 2,713/3,989 Nm. With Fanuc, 37/45 kW or 53/77.9 kW (S1/S3), with 2,210/2,687 Nm or 2,713/3,989 Nm. Top speed is 3,400 rpm on the 130 mm spindle and 3,000 rpm on the 150 mm spindle before options.

05 How does the WFT 13/15 compare with the WFT 10/11?

The WFT 10/11 has a 100/110 mm (3.9/4.3 in) spindle with 730 mm (28.7 in) of travel and a 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) table. The WFT 13/15 has a 130/150 mm (5.1/5.9 in) spindle with 800 mm (31.5 in) of travel, a 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) table and Y travel up to 3,500 mm (137.8 in).
