Overview

The Fermat GANTRY HEAVY puts a horizontal boring mill's spindle on a gantry. Two columns travel 10,000 - 50,000 mm (393.7 - 1,968.5 in) along the floor, the headstock crosses 6,100 mm (240.2 in) between them, and a ram comes down 1,600 mm (63.0 in) with a 160 mm (6.3 in) boring spindle inside.

That spindle is the unusual part. A gantry normally carries a milling spindle in its ram; Fermat says this one uses the spindle proven on its floor-type horizontal mills, with a 1000mm extension in the W-axis. A quill that feeds out of the ram lets the machine bore deep, accurately aligned holes from above, work that otherwise means moving the part to a boring mill.

The drive is a single rating: 74/91 kW (S1/S6) and 3,349/4,120 Nm with a Heidenhain or Siemens control, at up to 2,500 rpm on SK 50, BIG+ or HSK100. Torque of that order is for large face mills and boring bars, and the speed ceiling is what is given up for it.

Fermat describes the machine as multifunctional, covering drilling, milling and turning, and built for machining workpieces in one setup. It is equipped with floor plates 4,000 mm (157.5 in) wide. Rapid feed is 20,000 mm/min (787.4 ipm) in X and Y and 10,000 mm/min (393.7 ipm) in Z.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 160 mm (6.3 in) boring spindle in a gantry ram, with a 1000mm W-axis extension per Fermat
  • X travel of 10,000 - 50,000 mm (393.7 - 1,968.5 in)
  • 74/91 kW (S1/S6) and 3,349/4,120 Nm
  • 6,100 mm (240.2 in) of Y travel between the columns over 4,000 mm (157.5 in) floor plates
  • Drilling, milling and turning named by Fermat for one-setup machining

Limitations

  • One Y travel of 6,100 mm (240.2 in); the GANTRY HEAVY-DUTY offers 5,800/6,800/7,800 mm (228.3/267.7/307.1 in)
  • Spindle speed stops at 2,500 rpm
  • Z rapid feed is 10,000 mm/min (393.7 ipm), half that of X and Y
  • The table has no W-axis row; the 1000mm extension appears only in Fermat's description

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between GANTRY HEAVY and GANTRY HEAVY-DUTY?

The GANTRY HEAVY-DUTY is the larger frame, with Y travels of 5,800/6,800/7,800 mm (228.3/267.7/307.1 in), a ram of 1,500/2,000 mm (59.1/78.7 in) and floor plate widths of 3,000/4,000/5,000 mm (118.1/157.5/196.9 in). The GANTRY HEAVY has one size: 6,100 mm (240.2 in) of Y, a 1,600 mm (63.0 in) ram and a 4,000 mm (157.5 in) floor plate. Spindle and drive rows are the same.

02 Does the GANTRY HEAVY have a boring spindle?

Yes. The table lists a spindle diameter of 160 mm (6.3 in), and Fermat states that the spindle, proven on its floor-type horizontal mills, has a 1000mm extension in the W-axis. The ram itself travels 1,600 mm (63.0 in) in Z.

03 How long can the GANTRY HEAVY be built?

X-axis travel of the columns is listed as 10,000 - 50,000 mm (393.7 - 1,968.5 in). Y is 6,100 mm (240.2 in) and the floor plate is 4,000 mm (157.5 in) wide, so the length is the dimension that is fitted to the workpiece.

04 What power and speed does the GANTRY HEAVY spindle have?

74/91 kW (S1/S6) and 3,349/4,120 Nm with a Heidenhain or Siemens CNC, at a maximum of 2,500 rpm. Tool interfaces are SK 50 in DIN, MAS or ANSI form, BIG+ or HSK100. The accessory list includes a tool changer, a robot and an operator shield.
