Overview

The Fermat WRF MILL is a floor-type milling machine on the WRF frame. It keeps the travelling column and the ram but leaves out the boring spindle: there is no spindle diameter and no W axis in its table. What it gets in return is speed, 5,000 rpm at the SK 50, BIG+ or HSK100 taper, and a ram that reaches further than on the boring versions.

Ram travel in Z is 1,550 mm (61.0 in), optionally 2,000 mm (78.7 in). Fermat's bullet list gives the standard stroke as 1500mm; the table is the more specific source. With no quill to extend, the ram and the milling head on its nose do all the reaching, so the head matters more here than on a boring mill. Fermat offers a wide variety of milling heads, and the accessory list names a straight head and an automatic C-axis.

The motors are sized for milling cutters, not boring bars. With a Heidenhain or Siemens control they are 43/60 kW or 53/77.9 kW (S1/S6), and torque is 917/1,274 Nm or 1,591/2,338 Nm. That is well under the WRF 130, which lists 2,713/3,989 Nm with its larger motor.

X runs 4,000 - 28,100 mm (157.5 - 1,106.3 in) and Y 2,000 - 6,000 mm (78.7 - 236.2 in). Rapid feed is 20,000/15,000/20,000 mm/min in X/Y/Z, so the ram moves twice as fast as on the WRF 130. The machine is equipped with a floor plate and a rotary table.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 5,000 rpm spindle, faster than any WRF boring model
  • Ram travel of 1,550 mm (61.0 in), optionally 2,000 mm (78.7 in)
  • 20,000 mm/min (787.4 ipm) rapid feed on the ram as well as along the bed
  • X up to 28,100 mm (1,106.3 in) and Y up to 6,000 mm (236.2 in)
  • Wide variety of milling heads; straight head and automatic C-axis on the accessory list

Limitations

  • No boring spindle and no W axis: deep bores need a head or a different machine
  • Torque peaks at 1,591/2,338 Nm (S1/S6), well below the WRF boring models
  • Power and torque rows are given for Heidenhain or Siemens only

Best For

Milling and drilling of medium-size and large workpieces Long weldments along a bed of up to 28,100 mm (1,106.3 in) Multi-face work with Fermat's milling heads Parts where 5,000 rpm suits smaller cutters

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the WRF MILL a boring mill?

No. Fermat calls it a floor-type milling machine for fast and precise milling and drilling. Its table has no spindle diameter and no W-axis row, which the WRF 130 has at 130 mm (5.1 in) and 800 mm (31.5 in). The spindle sits in the ram, and reach comes from the ram stroke of 1,550 mm (61.0 in) or 2,000 mm (78.7 in).

02 What spindle power does the WRF MILL have?

With a Heidenhain or Siemens CNC, 43/60 kW or 53/77.9 kW (S1/S6), with 917/1,274 Nm or 1,591/2,338 Nm of torque. Maximum speed is 5,000 rpm. Fermat states that the machine is also equipped with FANUC controls, but the table gives no separate FANUC ratings.

03 How large a part can the WRF MILL cover?

X travel of the column is 4,000 - 28,100 mm (157.5 - 1,106.3 in) and Y travel of the headstock 2,000 - 6,000 mm (78.7 - 236.2 in). Z is the ram: 1,550 mm (61.0 in) or 2,000 mm (78.7 in). The part rests on a floor plate or rotary table; rotary tables T20 and T25/50 are on the accessory list.

04 Is the standard ram stroke 1,500 or 1,550 mm?

Fermat's page gives both. The description says ram stroke 1500mm, optionally 2000 mm, while the specification table lists the Z-axis travel of the ram as 1,550 mm (61.0 in), optionally 2,000 mm (78.7 in). This page follows the table; have the figure confirmed before ordering.
