DMS Mammoth5 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the DMS Mammoth5 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from DMS or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The DMS Mammoth5 is a large-format 5-axis CNC router for parts that are measured in tens of feet: aerospace molds, marine patterns, automotive prototypes and big composite structures, in the examples DMS gives. Y is listed from 5 ft to 100 ft, X from 5 ft to 20 ft, and Z at 48 in or 72 in (1,219 or 1,829 mm).

How the work gets in and out matters as much as the travel on a machine this size. DMS offers sliding doors on both the front and the back, so a long plug or mold can be loaded from either end, and a universal fixture table that it says cuts the downtime between part runs.

Sizes are built from a bridge stroke of 5, 10, 12, 15 or 20 ft and a depth in multiples of 5 ft, with 12 ft and 22 ft also listed. All linear axes are rack and pinion on a heavy-duty steel gantry and frame. Average speed over the three axes is 1,333 in/min (33.9 m/min). Motor encoders are absolute, scales can be added as an option, and both the HMI and the NC are Fagor.

The head tilts 115° or 130° on B. C turns 363° each way on a DMS head, optionally continuous, or 320° on a Hiteco head, at spindle speeds up to 24,000 rpm. The tool changer can be a rack or a carousel with 10, 12 or 18 tools, the largest count DMS lists alongside the Yellowstone5. The product page and the data sheet give different spindle power ranges for the Mammoth5, so the spindle and head have to be fixed in the quotation.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Y stroke up to 100 ft and X up to 20 ft for molds, plugs and large composite structures
  • Z stroke of 48 in or 72 in (1,219 or 1,829 mm)
  • Optional sliding doors on both front and back for loading large materials from either end
  • Tool changer options of 10, 12 or 18 tools in a rack or carousel
  • Universal fixture table to shorten the changeover between part runs
  • Scales available as an option on a rack-and-pinion machine

Limitations

  • Rack and pinion on every linear axis; no ball-screw option is listed for this model
  • Spindle power is stated differently on the product page and on the data sheet, so it cannot be read off the published figures
  • With continuous C the rotary axes switch from absolute to incremental encoders
  • A machine with up to 100 ft of Y and 72 in (1,829 mm) of Z is a building-scale installation

Best For

Aerospace molds and large lay-up tooling Marine plugs and patterns many feet long Automotive prototypes and full-size models in foam and tooling board Large composite structures that need 5-axis trimming

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large is the DMS Mammoth5?

The stroke table lists X, the bridge axis, from 5 ft to 20 ft, Y from 5 ft to 100 ft and Z at 48 in or 72 in (1,219 or 1,829 mm). Bridge strokes of 5, 10, 12, 15 and 20 ft are listed, with depth in multiples of 5 ft plus 12 ft and 22 ft.

02 How is the Mammoth5 loaded?

DMS offers the option of sliding doors on both the front and the back of the machine for loading and unloading large materials. It also describes a universal fixture table intended to reduce downtime between part runs, and lists compatibility with robotics among the automation options.

03 What are the B and C axis ranges of the Mammoth5?

B is listed as (+/-) 115° / 130°. C is (+/-) 363° with a DMS head, with continuous rotation as an option, and (+/-) 320° with a Hiteco head. When continuous C is fitted the rotary encoders are incremental; all other motor encoders are absolute.

04 How many tools does the Mammoth5 hold?

The tool changer is listed as rack, carousel or manual, with maximum counts of 10 / 12 / 18. The Redwood5 and Glacier5 list rack or carousel changers too, so the difference is the 18-tool option. Which count goes with which changer is not broken out on the data sheet.

05 How does the Mammoth5 differ from the Yellowstone5?

Both list X from 5 ft to 20 ft, Y from 5 ft to 100 ft and tool counts of 10 / 12 / 18. The Mammoth5 lists Z at 48 in or 72 in and offers doors front and back. The Yellowstone5 lists 48 in of Z as standard with up to 72 in available, and DMS describes front doors that slide open.
