Uncertain

We do not have a price for the DMS Glacier3 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.

DMS Glacier3 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the DMS Glacier3 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from DMS or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The DMS Glacier3 is the fully enclosed machine of the DMS 3-axis line, a 3-axis version of the enclosed Glacier platform. It pairs 30 in (762 mm) of Z stroke with ball-screw motion, a combination none of its open-frame 3-axis siblings lists. X, the bridge axis, is offered from 4 ft to 12 ft and Y from 3 ft to 6 ft.

The enclosure is the reason to choose it. Foam, composites and tooling materials throw dust that an open gantry leaves to the room, and a closed work area keeps it where an extraction system can collect it. The 30 in of Z then lets the same machine take deep patterns and moulds, not only sheet.

DMS lists the transmission as spinning ball nut and recirculating ball screw, with absolute motor encoders, linear scales available as an option and a Fagor 8065 control. Average speed over the three axes is given as 1,400 in/min (35,560 mm/min), and accuracy as 0.0025-0.005 in (0.064-0.127 mm).

Spindles start higher than on the open routers: the range is 8-18 kW S1, against 4.5-18 kW S1 on the Teton3, with a maximum of 18 kW S1 / 21 kW S6 at 24,000 rpm. The tool changer is a rack, or tools are changed manually, and the maximum is listed as 10 / 12. Table sizes are 4 ft x 3 ft, 5 ft x 5 ft, 10 ft x 5 ft, and 12 ft x 3 ft or 6 ft.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Fully enclosed work area, the only enclosed model in the DMS 3-axis line
  • 30 in (762 mm) of Z stroke for patterns, moulds and thick blocks
  • Spinning ball nut and recirculating ball screw transmission, with linear scales available as an option
  • Spindles up to 18 kW S1 / 21 kW S6 at 24,000 rpm, including the Hiteco PT500
  • Average speed of 1,400 in/min (35,560 mm/min) across the three axes

Limitations

  • Y range ends at 6 ft, so the enclosed envelope is long and shallow: up to 12 ft on X but no more than 6 ft deep
  • The smallest listed spindle is 8 kW S1; the Teton3 and Redwood3 start at 4.5 kW S1
  • Tool changing is by rack or manual only; the data sheet lists no carousel for this model
  • Linear scales are an option, not part of the base machine

Best For

Foam, composite and tooling-board work where dust has to stay inside an enclosure Patterns and moulds that need up to 30 in (762 mm) of Z Long, shallow parts on the 12 ft x 3 ft or 12 ft x 6 ft table Work that calls for ball-screw motion and optional scales on a 3-axis machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the Glacier3 different from the other DMS 3-axis routers?

It is fully enclosed, and it has the deepest fixed Z in the group at 30 in (762 mm). The Teton3 lists 18 in (457 mm). Like the Teton3 it uses a spinning ball nut and recirculating ball screw transmission, where the Bryce3, Redwood3 and Klondike3 are rack and pinion.

02 What are the travels of the Glacier3?

DMS gives X, the bridge axis, as 4 ft minimum and 12 ft maximum, Y as 3 ft minimum and 6 ft maximum, and Z as 30 in. The matching table sizes are 4 ft x 3 ft, 5 ft x 5 ft, 10 ft x 5 ft, and 12 ft x 3 ft or 6 ft.

03 What spindle power is available on the Glacier3?

The spindle range is 8-18 kW on the S1 rating, with a model maximum of 18 kW S1 / 21 kW S6 and a top speed of 24,000 rpm. The units listed are the Hiteco MT200, MT201, PT300, PT400 and PT500.

04 How many tools does the Glacier3 hold?

The data sheet gives the tool changer type as rack or manual and the maximum as 10 / 12. It does not explain which rack gives which count, so ask DMS which of the two capacities applies to the table size you are considering.
