How much does the Biglia BMX 51-Y2 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Biglia BMX 51-Y2 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
In the Biglia BMX 51-Y2 the main spindle and the sub-spindle are the same unit, and that symmetry is the point of the model. Each has an ASA 5" nose, runs to 5,000 rpm and is rated 17 / 25 kW with 108 / 159 Nm. The machine takes 51 mm (2.0 in) bar and belongs to what Biglia calls the fourth generation of its QUATTRO series of double-spindle, double-turret turning centres.
The bigger siblings do not share this balance. The BMX 70-Y2 has a 30 / 40 kW main spindle and the BMX 80-Y2 one with 441 / 477 Nm, yet both keep the ASA 5" sub-spindle found here. On those machines the first operation has to carry the heavy cuts. On this one a part can be divided down the middle, with roughly equal work on each side, and whichever spindle is free is as capable as the other.
The working envelope is large for the bar size. Maximum machining diameter is 270 mm and machining length 640 mm, so the machine is also at home with chucked blanks, using 165 / 210 mm chucks on either spindle. Two 15-station turrets do the cutting, one above and one below, each with a Y-axis of 90 mm. Their live tools are driven directly by a motor in the tool plate, rated 11 / 12.5 kW and 30 / 34.5 Nm.
Biglia lists the BMX 51-Y2 at 10,800 kg with swarf conveyor, the lightest of the three sizes, with a 500 L coolant tank and a FANUC 31i control.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Identical main and sub-spindle: ASA 5", 5,000 rpm, 17 / 25 kW and 108 / 159 Nm
- Highest main spindle speed of the three sizes, against 4,500 rpm on the BMX 70-Y2 and 3,500 rpm on the BMX 80-Y2
- Two 15-station turrets, each with 90 mm of Y travel and direct-drive live tools
- 270 mm machining diameter and 640 mm machining length on a 51 mm bar machine
- 4-axis turning with both turrets on the main spindle, named by Biglia among the main advantages
Limitations
- Bar capacity is 51 mm; larger bar needs the BMX 70-Y2 or BMX 80-Y2
- Main spindle torque of 108 / 159 Nm is the lowest of the three sizes
- Y-axis rapid is 9 m/min, half the 18 m/min of the X axes
- A machine of 10,800 kg and 5,300 mm length for parts that start from 51 mm bar

Frequently Asked Questions
01
On the table, yes. Main spindle and sub-spindle both list 5,000 rpm, an ASA 5" nose, a 59.5 mm bore, 90 mm bearing inside diameter, 165 / 210 mm chucks, 17 / 25 kW and 108 / 159 Nm. The sub-spindle row adds a drawtube inside diameter of 50 mm. Biglia's brochure labels the unit as the ASA 5 main and sub-spindle for 51 mm bar capacity.
02
They are different machines, not two sizes of one. The BMX 45Y2 takes 45 mm bar, machines up to 180 mm long, has 12-station turrets and weighs 6,000 kg. The BMX 51-Y2 takes 51 mm bar, machines up to 640 mm long and 270 mm in diameter, has 15-station turrets and weighs 10,800 kg.
03
For the upper and lower turret the table gives 180 mm of X stroke at 18 m/min, 90 mm of Y stroke at 9 m/min and a Z stroke printed as 640-540 mm at 30 m/min. The table does not say which turret has which Z figure, so confirm that with Biglia when planning long parts.
04
The brochure names two configurations for the series. The Y configuration has two turrets with 15 tool stations each, two spindles with C-axis and 1 Y-axis. The Y2 configuration has the same turrets and spindles with 2 Y-axes. The specification table is headed with the Y2 models.
