Overview

The Biglia BMX 70-Y2 is the middle size of Biglia's twin-spindle, twin-turret BMX line and the one with the strongest motor: 30 / 40 kW (40.2 / 53.6 hp) at the main spindle, with 255 / 286 Nm and a top speed of 4,500 rpm. Bar capacity is 70 mm (2.8 in) through a 78 mm bore on an ASA 6" nose.

A machine like this earns its keep when two tools cut at the same time. Both turrets can work on the main spindle together, which Biglia calls 4-axis turning, or one can work at each spindle after the part has been handed over. A 40 kW main spindle is what makes the first of those worthwhile: with two roughing tools in the cut at once, a smaller motor would be the limit before the tools were.

The sub-spindle is lighter than the main one, and the process should be planned around that. It is an ASA 5" unit with 17 / 25 kW, 108 / 159 Nm and 5,000 rpm, a 59.5 mm bore and a 50 mm drawtube. Parts cut from 70 mm bar must be turned down, or gripped on a smaller diameter, before the second spindle can take them deep in its chuck. The sub-spindle moves on Z3 and X3, so it can be offset from the main spindle axis to keep the turrets apart.

Machining diameter is 270 mm and machining length 640 mm. Each turret has 15 stations and 90 mm of Y. Coolant comes from a 500 L tank at a standard 7 bar, with 40 or 70 bar pumps as options, and the machine weighs 11,000 kg with swarf conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Main spindle with 30 / 40 kW and 255 / 286 Nm, the highest power in the BMX table
  • 70 mm bar capacity while still reaching 4,500 rpm
  • Two turrets with 15 live stations each, driven at 11 / 12.5 kW and 30 / 34.5 Nm
  • Sub-spindle with both axial and radial movement (Z3 and X3) and a parts ejector as standard
  • FANUC 31i control with 15" touch screen and direct import of DXF files

Limitations

  • The sub-spindle is rated 17 / 25 kW and 108 / 159 Nm, well below the main spindle
  • Its 50 mm drawtube is smaller than the 70 mm bar the main spindle feeds
  • Y rapid traverse is 9 m/min
  • High-pressure coolant at 40 or 70 bar is an option; the standard pumps give 7 bar
06

Best For

Bar work up to 70 mm with heavy first-side roughing Simultaneous turning with two tools on the main spindle Complex turned and milled parts finished in one setup Chucked parts up to 270 mm with a 250 mm chuck on the main spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How powerful is the main spindle of the BMX 70-Y2?

The table lists motor power of 30 / 40 kW and maximum torque of 255 / 286 Nm, at up to 4,500 rpm. The spindle has an ASA 6" nose, a 78 mm bore, bearings of 110 mm inside diameter and 210 / 250 mm chucks. It is a liquid-cooled built-in motor spindle.

02 What is the difference between the BMX 70-Y2 and the BMX 80-Y2?

The main spindle. The BMX 80-Y2 takes 80 mm bar on an ASA 8" nose with a 91 mm bore, 441 / 477 Nm, 23 / 25 kW and 3,500 rpm. The BMX 70-Y2 takes 70 mm bar with 255 / 286 Nm, 30 / 40 kW and 4,500 rpm. Envelope, turrets and sub-spindle are the same, and the BMX 80-Y2 is listed at 11,300 kg against 11,000 kg for the BMX 70-Y2.

03 What live tooling do the turrets have?

Each of the two turrets has 15 stations and 15 live tool positions. The table gives 6,000 / 10,000 rpm, 11 / 12.5 kW and 30 / 34.5 Nm. Biglia describes a cooled, thermally stabilized motor built into the tool plate that drives the rotary tool directly. Turret indexing takes 0.15 sec for one position.

04 What does the standard configuration include?

Biglia's standard configuration lists two liquid-cooled built-in motor spindles, two 15-post servo turrets with direct drive to the rotary tools, the sub-spindle with axial and radial movement and parts ejector, a bar-feeder interface, an automatic parts-catcher and a coolant system with 7 bar pumps and filters. A tool setter, tool wear and breakage monitoring and a chip breakage function are main options.
