Overview

Biglia's brochure for the BMX twin-turret line has a third column beside the 51 and 70 mm machines: the BMX 80-Y2, with 80 mm (3.1 in) bar capacity and an ASA 8" main spindle. It is the torque version of the family. Maximum torque is 441 / 477 Nm (325 / 352 lb-ft), motor power 23 / 25 kW and top speed 3,500 rpm.

What changes from the smaller sizes is confined to the main spindle. The bore grows to 91 mm and the bearings to 130 mm inside diameter. The frame does not grow with them. Maximum machining diameter stays at 270 mm and machining length at 640 mm, the turrets keep 15 stations each, and the X strokes remain 180 mm. So this is not a bigger machine in the usual sense. It is the same machine set up for thicker bar and slower, heavier cuts.

That has consequences worth thinking through. An 80 mm bar is far smaller than the 270 mm machining diameter, so the envelope is no constraint for bar work. The second spindle is the tighter spot: it is the ASA 5" unit of the whole range, with a 59.5 mm bore, a 50 mm drawtube, 17 / 25 kW and 108 / 159 Nm. Back-end operations on a part turned from 80 mm stock must suit a spindle designed around 51 mm bar.

The weight is 11,300 kg with swarf conveyor, on a footprint of 5,300 x 2,235 mm. Control is the FANUC 31i-mod. B Plus iHMI named in the brochure.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Largest bar capacity of the BMX line at 80 mm, through a 91 mm bore
  • 441 / 477 Nm of main-spindle torque for large bar in tough materials
  • Same two 15-station turrets with 90 mm Y axes as the smaller sizes
  • Coolant tank of 500 L fed by 3 electropumps with a combined rating of 3.7 kW
  • 45° slant cast-iron bed, listed by Biglia as a main benefit of the line

Limitations

  • Top speed of 3,500 rpm, against 4,500 rpm on the BMX 70-Y2
  • Motor power of 23 / 25 kW is lower than the 30 / 40 kW of the BMX 70-Y2
  • Sub-spindle remains ASA 5" with a 50 mm drawtube and 108 / 159 Nm
  • Heaviest of the three at 11,300 kg

Best For

Bar work between 70 and 80 mm in diameter Stainless and alloy steel parts needing low-speed torque Parts with most of the stock removal on the first side Twin-turret roughing on the main spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the bar capacity of the BMX 80-Y2?

80 mm, the largest in Biglia's BMX table. The main spindle has an ASA 8" nose, a 91 mm bore and bearings of 130 mm inside diameter, and takes 210 / 250 mm chucks. Biglia's brochure labels it the ASA 8 main spindle for 80 mm bar capacity.

02 Is the BMX 80-Y2 physically larger than the BMX 70-Y2?

Not according to the table. Both list 5,300 x 2,235 x 2,380 mm with swarf conveyor, a 1,280 mm spindle centre height, a 270 mm machining diameter and a 640 mm machining length. The BMX 80-Y2 weighs 11,300 kg and the BMX 70-Y2 11,000 kg.

03 How do the two spindles of the BMX 80-Y2 compare?

They are far apart. The main spindle delivers 441 / 477 Nm at up to 3,500 rpm with 23 / 25 kW. The sub-spindle is rated 108 / 159 Nm and 17 / 25 kW, but turns faster at 5,000 rpm. Use the main side for heavy turning and drilling, and the second side for finishing, small drilling and light milling.

04 Can both turrets cut on the main spindle at once?

Yes. Among the main advantages Biglia lists 4-axis turning using both turrets on the main spindle for simultaneous operation, and simultaneous machining with three tools through the Superimposition function. The sub-spindle moves on Z3 and X3 so that the turrets do not interfere with each other.
