Overview

For shafts that need milling away from the centreline, Biglia builds the B1250Y: the long-bed lathe with a Y-axis, driven tools, a C-axis and a tailstock. Its three linear travels are 305 mm on X, 140 mm on Y and 1,310 mm on Z, and it turns parts up to 1,195 mm long with a Ø 315 mm chuck.

Consider a long drive shaft with a keyway at one end, a pair of wrench flats in the middle and an offset oil hole. The keyway could be cut on the B1250M, but the flats and the offset hole call for Y travel. On this machine all three are finished while the shaft is still held between chuck and centre, which keeps them in line with the turned diameters.

Holding that shaft is where the B1250 bed helps. The standard tailstock uses a 115 mm hydraulic quill with a 150 mm stroke and an MT 5 centre, and the table gives 1,310 mm of automatic positioning for it. A B-axis tailstock driven by its own servo, with 1,140 mm of positioning at 15 m/min, is the listed alternative. For slender work Biglia offers an automatic steady-rest on the B1250, good for shafts up to 240 mm in diameter.

The Y-axis rapid is 7.5 m/min, and live tools are rated 12/15 kW and 35/37 Nm. The main spindle is ASA 8" in both of its forms, with up to 800-1,014 Nm at 3,000 rpm. The machine weighs 8,100 kg with swarf conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 140 mm of Y travel combined with 1,310 mm of Z travel
  • Mills flats, keyways and off-centre holes on shafts up to 1,195 mm long without re-fixturing
  • Quill tailstock as standard, B-axis servo tailstock with 1,140 mm of positioning as the alternative
  • Automatic steady-rest option for shafts up to 240 mm in diameter
  • Live tools at 16 or 12 turret stations with a 0.001° C-axis

Limitations

  • Y rapid traverse is 7.5 m/min
  • No sub-spindle; the chucked end needs a second setup
  • Only ASA 8" main spindles, at 3,000 or 3,200 rpm
  • Live tool torque is 35/37 Nm, so large-cutter milling on big shafts is slow
06

Best For

Long shafts with flats, keyways and offset holes Rolls, rods and spindles milled between chuck and centre Parts needing a steady-rest and live tooling together One-setup work on forgings up to 93/100 mm bar size and beyond in the chuck

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the Y-axis travel of the B1250Y?

The Y-axis stroke is 140 mm and its rapid traverse 7.5 m/min. X-axis stroke is 305 mm at 18 m/min and Z-axis stroke 1,310 mm at 24 m/min. The C-axis has a minimum programmable value of 0.001° and a maximum rapid of 100 rpm.

02 How does the B1250Y differ from the B750Y?

Bed length, spindles and tailstock. The B750Y has 860 mm of Z travel, a 765 mm machining length and a choice of three spindles including an ASA 6" unit at 4,500 rpm; its tailstock is the servo B-axis type. The B1250Y has 1,310 mm of Z travel, a 1,195 mm machining length, ASA 8" spindles only and a hydraulic-quill tailstock as standard.

03 Which tailstock options does the B1250Y list?

The table has values in both tailstock sections. The quill tailstock: 150 mm automatic quill stroke, 115 mm quill diameter, MT 5 and 1,310 mm of automatic positioning by the turret carriage. The B-axis tailstock: MT 5/4, 1,140 mm of automatic positioning and a 15 m/min rapid. Biglia states that the B-axis type is an option on the B1250.

04 How much room does the B1250Y need?

With swarf conveyor the machine is listed at 562 x 219 x 249 cm, the last figure being the height, and 8,100 kg. Spindle centre height is 1,065 mm. The coolant tank holds 300 L and the pump delivers 60 L/min.
