Overview

The Biglia B750 is the two-axis base version of Biglia's larger universal turning centre: a chucker and bar lathe with 305 mm (12.0 in) of X travel, 860 mm (33.9 in) of Z and a CNC tailstock, without driven tools. Maximum machining length is 765 mm (30.1 in) with a Ø 250 mm chuck, and swing over diameter is listed as 680/500 mm.

The first decision is the spindle, because Biglia offers three. The ASA 6" spindle takes 70 mm bar, turns at 4,500 rpm and is rated 30-40 kW and 286 Nm. Two ASA 8" spindles follow: one for 80 mm bar at 3,200 rpm with 15-22 kW and 398-700 Nm, and one for 93/100 mm bar at 3,000 rpm with 30-38 kW and 800-1,014 Nm. Chuck diameter rises with them: 250, 315 and 400 mm. The power and torque pairs are S1 and S3 ratings.

With no live tooling on board, the turret is a plain turning turret. It has 16 or 12 stations, takes 25x25 mm shanks for outside tools and 32-40 / 40-50 mm for boring bars, and indexes in 0.3 sec per position. That is enough for shafts, flanges and rings that go on to a mill afterwards, or that never need milling at all. The B750M is the same lathe with rotary tools and a C-axis added.

The tailstock runs on its own servo-driven B-axis with 910 mm of automatic positioning at 15 m/min and takes Morse taper 4-5 centres. Biglia lists the machine at 7,250 kg with swarf conveyor, on a footprint of 528 x 203 cm and 248 cm high.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Three main spindles to choose from, from ASA 6" at 4,500 rpm to an ASA 8" unit with 800-1,014 Nm
  • Up to 93/100 mm bar capacity and a 400 mm chuck on the largest spindle
  • Servo B-axis tailstock with 910 mm of programmable positioning at 15 m/min
  • 860 mm (33.9 in) of Z travel and a 765 mm machining length
  • Hardened and ground slide-ways on all axes, which Biglia names with the turret as the heart of the range

Limitations

  • No driven tools or C-axis: the live tooling rows of Biglia's table are blank for this version
  • No sub-spindle, so second operations need a re-chuck or another machine
  • The 80 mm bar spindle is rated only 15-22 kW and 3,200 rpm
  • Rapids of 18 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z are moderate for short-cycle work
06

Best For

Shaft turning up to 765 mm long with tailstock support Flanges and rings on a 250, 315 or 400 mm chuck Turning-only parts that need no milling or cross drilling Heavy roughing with the 800-1,014 Nm spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Which main spindles are available on the B750?

Three. An ASA 6" spindle with 70 mm bar capacity, 77.5 mm bore, 4,500 rpm, 30-40 kW and 286 Nm. An ASA 8" spindle with 80 mm bar capacity, 91 mm bore, 3,200 rpm, 15-22 kW and 398-700 Nm. And a larger ASA 8" spindle for 93/100 mm bar with a 106/111 mm bore, 3,000 rpm, 30-38 kW and 800-1,014 Nm. Biglia gives the power and torque figures as S1-S3 ratings.

02 Does the B750 have live tooling?

No. In Biglia's table the live tooling and C-axis rows are empty for the B750, which the brochure describes as the standard machine with CNC automatic tailstock. Rotary tools and a C-axis start with the B750M, a Y-axis comes with the B750Y, and a second spindle with the B750SM and B750YS.

03 How does the B750 tailstock work?

On the B750 the tailstock body slides on flat ways and is driven by a servo motor and ballscrew, which Biglia calls the B-axis. Position and thrust are set by the CNC. The table gives 910 mm of automatic positioning, a rapid traverse of 15 m/min and Morse taper 4-5. A rotating tailstock is listed among the optional features.

04 What is standard and what is optional on the B750?

Biglia's standard features for the series are a heavy cast-iron bed, the 12/16 position servo-turret, a comprehensive tooling package, chip conveyor, medium-pressure coolant supply with filter and an air-conditioned electrical cabinet. Options named in the brochure include a tool setter, high pressure coolant, a rotating tailstock, a kit for bar machining and an automatic door. The control is FANUC i-HMI.
