Overview

The Biglia B1250SM puts a sub-spindle on the long B1250 bed, giving it 1,130 mm (44.5 in) of B-axis positioning for the second spindle. Driven tools and a C-axis on each spindle are part of the version; a Y-axis is not.

Why combine a long bed with a sub-spindle? Two kinds of work benefit. The first is a long part that has to be finished at both ends: it is turned at the main spindle, handed to the second spindle automatically and machined on the end that was in the chuck. The second is ordinary chucker work with a lot of room. With 1,310 mm of Z travel the turret can clear long boring bars and drills at the main spindle and still reach a part parked well down the bed in the sub-spindle.

The sub-spindle is rated at 30 - 40 kW and 286 Nm with a top speed of 4,500 rpm, on an ASA 6" nose with 210 - 250 mm chucks and a 70 mm drawtube inside diameter. It is faster than either main spindle Biglia offers on this bed. The main spindles are ASA 8" units, 3,000 rpm with 800-1,014 Nm for 93/100 mm bar or, as an option, 3,200 rpm with 398-700 Nm for 80 mm bar. Small-diameter finishing and drilling therefore run better on the second side.

The turret has 16 or 12 stations, with live tooling at 12/15 kW and 35/37 Nm. Biglia lists the B1250SM at 8,250 kg with swarf conveyor. Whether a tailstock or steady-rest can be combined with the sub-spindle on a given machine is a question for Biglia.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Sub-spindle with 1,130 mm (44.5 in) of B-axis positioning at 24 m/min
  • Second spindle rated 30 - 40 kW, 286 Nm and 4,500 rpm, faster than the ASA 8" main spindles
  • 1,310 mm of Z travel leaves room for long tools between the two spindles
  • C-axis on both spindles with driven tools at 16 or 12 stations
  • Main spindle torque up to 800-1,014 Nm

Limitations

  • No Y-axis on this version
  • Main spindle speed is limited to 3,000 or 3,200 rpm
  • The sub-spindle drawtube is 70 mm inside, smaller than the 93/100 mm bar the main spindle can feed
  • At 8,250 kg it is heavier than every B1250 version except the B1250YS at 8,400 kg
06

Best For

Long parts machined at both ends in one cycle Large chucked parts needing back-face turning and drilling Long shafts and tubes handed from one chuck to the other First-side heavy roughing followed by faster second-side finishing

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How far can the sub-spindle travel on the B1250SM?

The table gives 1,130 mm of B-axis automatic positioning for the sub-spindle, with a rapid traverse of 24 m/min. On the shorter B750SM the same row reads 895 mm. The longer travel is what lets the second spindle work with parts and tools of very different lengths.

02 What are the sub-spindle ratings?

Maximum speed 4,500 rpm, ASA 6" spindle nose, 77.5 mm bore, 70 mm drawtube inside diameter and 110 mm bearing inside diameter. Chuck diameter is 210 - 250 mm, motor power 30 - 40 kW and maximum torque 286 Nm.

03 Does the B1250SM have a Y-axis?

No. Biglia's configuration list gives the SM version rotary tools, a C-axis on the main spindle and a C-axis on the second spindle. The Y-axis stroke row is blank for it. The B1250YS is the version that combines the sub-spindle with 140 mm of Y travel.

04 Which control does the machine use?

The brochure shows a FANUC CNC with the i-HMI interface: a 15" colour touch screen, QWERTY keyboard and a Biglia operator panel, with data transfer by Ethernet, memory card, USB and RS232. A tool setter and high pressure coolant are listed as optional features.
