Overview

A second spindle replaces the tailstock on the Biglia B750SM. The machine is the sub-spindle version of the B750 with driven tools and a C-axis on both spindles, built to finish both ends of a part without an operator turning it round.

The sub-spindle is a full-size unit. Biglia lists an ASA 6" nose, 77.5 mm bore, 70 mm drawtube inside diameter, 4,500 rpm, 30-40 kW and 286 Nm, with 210-250 mm chucks. Those figures match the ASA 6" main spindle, so with that main spindle the two ends of the job get equal power. Order one of the ASA 8" main spindles and the balance shifts: the 93/100 mm bar spindle delivers 800-1,014 Nm on the first side, while the second side stays at 286 Nm.

Pick-off is automatic. The sub-spindle travels on the B-axis with 895 mm of automatic positioning at 24 m/min, and the brochure describes the workpiece being transferred from the main to the sub-spindle so the whole process runs in one cycle. Because the B-axis is taken by the second spindle, the table shows no tailstock for this version, and long slender shafts are better served by the B750M.

Live tooling is rated 12/15 kW and 35/37 Nm at 16 or 12 turret stations, without a Y-axis. Travels are 305 mm on X and 860 mm on Z, and the listed weight is 7,500 kg with swarf conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Sub-spindle rated 30-40 kW and 286 Nm at 4,500 rpm, the same as the ASA 6" main spindle
  • 70 mm drawtube inside diameter on the sub-spindle, so bar-size parts can be gripped from behind
  • 895 mm of B-axis positioning at 24 m/min for part transfer
  • C-axis on both spindles with driven tools at every turret station
  • Kit for bar machining with automatic parts-catcher listed as an option for unattended bar work

Limitations

  • No tailstock: the B-axis tailstock rows are blank for this version
  • No Y-axis; off-centre milling needs the B750YS
  • One turret serves both spindles, so the two sides are machined one after the other
  • With an ASA 8" main spindle the sub-spindle has far less torque than the main
06

Best For

Chucked parts machined complete on both faces Bar parts up to 70 mm picked off and back-worked Flanged components needing drilling on front and back Batches where a manual second setup is the bottleneck

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the sub-spindle on the B750SM?

It is an ASA 6" spindle with a 77.5 mm bore, a 70 mm drawtube inside diameter and bearings of 110 mm inside diameter. Maximum speed is 4,500 rpm, motor power 30-40 kW and maximum torque 286 Nm. Chuck diameter is given as 210-250 mm.

02 Does the B750SM have a tailstock?

Biglia's table shows no tailstock values for the B750SM. The B-axis carries the sub-spindle instead, with 895 mm of automatic positioning and a 24 m/min rapid. The B750, B750M and B750Y are the versions listed with the B-axis tailstock, which has 910 mm of positioning.

03 What is the difference between the B750SM and the B750YS?

The Y-axis. Both have the sub-spindle, driven tools and C-axis on each spindle. The B750YS adds 140 mm of Y travel with a rapid of 7.5 m/min and is listed at 7,600 kg; the B750SM has no Y travel and is listed at 7,500 kg.

04 Which main spindle suits the B750SM best?

That depends on the first operation. The ASA 6" main spindle (70 mm bar, 4,500 rpm, 30-40 kW, 286 Nm) mirrors the sub-spindle. The ASA 8" spindles give 398-700 Nm for 80 mm bar or 800-1,014 Nm for 93/100 mm bar, with 315 or 400 mm chucks, but run at 3,200 and 3,000 rpm. The sub-spindle stays the same in every case.
