Overview
The Takamaz XW-60 is a twin-spindle, twin-turret CNC precision lathe designed for high-volume production of small parts up to 6-inch diameter with complete both-end machining in a single cycle. The dual opposed spindles with automatic part transfer enable first-operation and second-operation turning without operator intervention, while the dual 8-station turrets provide independent tooling on each spindle for maximum process flexibility.
Both spindles deliver up to 4,500 RPM (6,000 RPM optional) with 7.5/5.5 kW motors through 75 mm bearing bores. An optional 5-inch collet with 65 mm bearing bore is available for shops working with smaller diameter parts where higher speeds are advantageous. The dual-spindle configuration means parts are loaded into the first spindle, machined on the first end, transferred to the second spindle, and machined on the second end — all automatically within the machine's enclosed work zone.
Each turret provides 8 stations with 125 mm of X-travel and 140 mm of Z-travel. The rapid traverse rates are notable: 21 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z, with the higher X-axis speed reflecting the emphasis on fast turret positioning for production cycling. The Fanuc 0i-TF control manages both spindles and turrets through dual-channel programming, enabling simultaneous machining on both spindles when cycle time optimization demands it.
The XW-60's footprint of 1,595 x 2,005 mm is compact for a twin-spindle machine, though it requires more space than single-spindle alternatives. With integrated gantry loader capability, the machine runs complete parts unattended — raw blanks go in one end, finished parts come out the other. For shops producing automotive, hydraulic, or industrial components that require machining on both ends, the XW-60 consolidates what would otherwise require two machines and an operator into a single automated cell.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Twin-spindle architecture enables complete both-end machining with automatic part transfer in one cycle
- Dual 8-station turrets provide independent tooling on each spindle for maximum process flexibility
- 21 m/min X-axis rapid traverse is faster than most competitors for quick turret positioning
- Optional 6,000 RPM spindle upgrade maximizes surface speed for aluminum and non-ferrous production
- Compact footprint under 1.6 x 2.0 meters for a full twin-spindle machine
- Fanuc 0i-TF dual-channel control enables simultaneous machining on both spindles
Limitations
- 140 mm Z-axis travel limits the machine to shorter parts only
- 8-station turrets may be insufficient for complex parts; the XW-60M offers 10-station alternative
- No live tooling on the standard XW-60 restricts it to pure turning operations
- Higher investment than single-spindle alternatives requires sufficient production volume to justify

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New Takamaz XW-60 machines price between $170,000 and $250,000 depending on spindle speed option and gantry loader configuration. The twin-spindle design replaces two machines and an operator, justifying the investment at moderate to high production volumes.
02
The XW-60 has dual 8-station turrets for turning operations only. The XW-60M upgrades to dual 10-station turrets with live tooling capability, adding cross-drilling, tapping, and milling to both spindle stations. The XW-60M is slightly wider at 1,695 mm.
03
The XW-60 handles parts up to 6-inch diameter versus 130 mm on the XW-130, with smaller turrets and less spindle power. The XW-60 is more compact and less expensive, targeting smaller parts at higher speeds while the XW-130 handles larger, heavier workpieces.
04
Yes, the Fanuc 0i-TF dual-channel control supports simultaneous machining on both spindles. This overlaps first-operation and second-operation cycle times, reducing the effective cycle time for complete parts compared to sequential processing.
