Overview

The Johnford SL-35 looks like a sibling of the SL-30 on paper and is a different machine underneath. It keeps the 8 in chuck, Ø51 mm (Ø2 in) bar capacity and 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), 4,500 rpm spindle. The bed changes: a 45° slant bed replaces the 30° saddle of the SL-20 and SL-30.

With the new bed comes a shorter, squarer work zone. Z travel is 400 mm (15.7 in), or 300 mm (11.8 in) on the Y-axis version, against 600 mm (23.6 in) on the SL-30. Swing over the cross slide rises to Ø350 mm (Ø13.8 in) and X travel to 190 mm (7.5 in). The enclosure is narrower and lower at 1,552 x 1,710 mm (61.1 x 67.3 in), though the machine is 3,680 mm (144.9 in) long and weighs 4,200 kg (9,240 lb).

This is also the first SL model whose table carries Y-axis data. Y travel is ±40 mm (±1.6 in), Y rapid 10 m/min (394 ipm), and a power turret motor of 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp) is listed for it. Johnford sells these as options, C+Y axis and a live tool turret in BMT or VDI, so the standard machine is still a two-axis lathe with a 12-position non-driven turret.

Short Z and optional Y point to chucking work: flanges, hubs, couplings and valve parts that are turned, then cross-drilled or milled off centre. A programmable hydraulic tailstock is standard on this size, with 320 mm (12.6 in) of travel.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 45° slant bed in the small SL range
  • Y-axis version with ±40 mm (±1.6 in) of travel and a 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp) power turret motor
  • Programmable hydraulic tailstock as standard
  • Swing over cross slide of Ø350 mm (Ø13.8 in)
  • Compact 1,552 x 1,710 mm (61.1 x 67.3 in) width and height

Limitations

  • Z travel of 400 mm (15.7 in), reduced to 300 mm (11.8 in) with the Y-axis
  • Tailstock travel of 320 mm (12.6 in)
  • One step spindle transmission; the 2-speed belt-type gearbox is optional
  • Y-axis, C-axis and live tooling are options, not standard equipment
06

Best For

Flanges, hubs and couplings held in an 8 in chuck Short parts needing off-centre drilling and milling with the Y-axis option Cells where a narrow machine cross-section matters

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Does the SL-35 have a Y-axis?

The table gives a Y-axis travel of ±40 mm (±1.6 in), a Y rapid of 10 m/min (394 ipm) and a 1.6 kW Y servo motor. The accessory list shows the C+Y axis and the live tool turret as options, so they must be ordered.

02 How long a part can the SL-35 turn?

Z travel is 400 mm (15.7 in), or 300 mm (11.8 in) with the Y-axis. Tailstock travel is 320 mm (12.6 in) with a quill travel of 60 mm (2.4 in).

03 What is the difference between the SL-35 and the SL-40?

The SL-40 is the next frame: Ø580 mm (Ø22.8 in) swing over the bed, a 10 in chuck, Ø76.5 mm (Ø3 in) bar capacity and an A2-8 nose at 4,000 rpm. The SL-35 swings Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) over the bed with an 8 in chuck and an A2-6 nose at 4,500 rpm.

04 What spindle does the SL-35 use?

An A2-6 spindle nose with a Ø65 mm (Ø2.6 in) bore and a Ø100 mm (Ø3.9 in) bearing diameter, driven by an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor through a one step transmission to 4,500 rpm.
