Overview

Four metres of bed behind a 185 mm (7.3 in) bore: the Johnford ST-160D has 4,050 mm (159.4 in) of Z travel and the D spindle with 165 mm (6.5 in) of bar capacity.

Long tubular parts are often too long even for a bed like this, and they run through the spindle and out of the back. Where the part does fit between the ends, a second option is worth knowing. A sub-spindle or counter-spindle can replace the tailstock, so a tube is gripped at both ends, driven from both and machined along its length or at either end. With thin-walled tube that is a gentler way to hold the work than a center pressing on a plug.

As standard the far end is a programmable tailstock with 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of travel and a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill.

Speed is 1,000 rpm through four automatic speeds, with 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) or optionally 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp). The chuck is 510 mm (20.1 in) on an A2-15 nose. This model weighs 24,500 kg (53,900 lb), against 24,200 kg (53,240 lb) for the ST-160C, and is 9,926 mm (390.8 in) long.
