Overview

Torque is the reason to pick the ASA 8" spindle on a Biglia B620. The table gives 398 - 700 Nm (294 - 516 lb-ft) at the main spindle, the highest of the three spindle sizes, together with the largest bar capacity in the range at 80 mm (3.1 in). Maximum speed is 3,200 rpm and motor power 15 - 22 kW (20.1 - 29.5 hp).

Read those two figures together. A 22 kW motor producing 700 Nm is a low-speed spindle: it is built to pull large-diameter cuts in tough material, not to finish small parts quickly. The B620 ASA 6" spindle has nearly twice the power rating at 30 - 40 kW and runs to 4,500 rpm, but lists 286 Nm. If most of the work is under 70 mm, that column is the better fit, and this one earns its place when bar between 70 and 80 mm or heavy interrupted cuts are routine.

The spindle itself is the biggest of the family, with a 91 mm bore and bearings of 130 mm inside diameter, carrying 210 / 250 mm chucks. Machining diameter is 360 mm and machining length 620 mm, as on the B620 ASA 6" machine, inside a 700 mm swing.

Biglia does not scale the rest of the lathe up with the spindle. The turret still has 15 stations and accepts 20x20 and 25x25 shanks and Ø32 mm boring bars, X travel is 180 mm, and the sub-spindle offered on the S, SM and YS versions remains the ASA 5" unit at 5,000 rpm and 108 - 159 Nm. Weight is 6,700 kg (14,771 lb) with swarf conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 398 - 700 Nm (294 - 516 lb-ft) of main-spindle torque, the most in the B620 table
  • 80 mm (3.1 in) bar capacity through a 91 mm spindle bore
  • Main bearings of 130 mm inside diameter, against 110 mm on the B620 ASA 6" and 90 mm on the B620 ASA 5"
  • Same 360 mm machining diameter and 620 mm length as the B620 ASA 6" machine, so the bigger spindle costs no envelope
  • Optional polygon turning and a choice of two parts-catcher systems, per Biglia's brochure

Limitations

  • Top speed of 3,200 rpm limits surface speed on small diameters and with small drills
  • Motor power is 15 - 22 kW, below the 30 - 40 kW of the B620 ASA 6"
  • The sub-spindle stays at ASA 5" with a 50 mm drawtube, so 80 mm bar parts cannot pass through it at full size
  • Tool shanks are limited to 25x25 square and Ø32 mm for boring bars, modest for a spindle with this torque
06

Best For

Bar work from 70 to 80 mm in diameter Low-speed, high-torque turning of alloy steels and stainless Large-bore chucked parts up to 360 mm in diameter Shaft work to 620 mm with the CNC tailstock

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why does the B620 ASA 8" spindle have less power than the B620 ASA 6" spindle?

Biglia's table lists 15 - 22 kW and 398 - 700 Nm at 3,200 rpm for this spindle, and 30 - 40 kW and 286 Nm at 4,500 rpm for the B620 ASA 6". The ASA 8" motor is wound for torque at low speed. It delivers more twisting force for large diameters and gives up top speed and peak power in exchange.

02 What is the largest bar the B620 ASA 8" can take?

The bar capacity row gives 80 mm (3.1 in), through a spindle bore of 91 mm. Biglia lists a parts catcher and a bar-feeder interface among the B620 standard features. If the part is to be transferred to the sub-spindle, remember that its drawtube inside diameter is 50 mm.

03 Does the turret change with the larger spindle?

No. All three spindle sizes use the 15-station Biglia servo turret, indexing one position in 0.15 sec, with tool shanks of 20x20 and 25x25 square and Ø32 mm for internal tools. Live tooling on the M, SM, Y and YS versions is rated 11 - 12.5 kW, 30 - 34.5 Nm and 6,000 - 10,000 rpm.

04 How much floor space and weight should be planned for?

Biglia gives 455.1 x 206.5 x 204.2 cm for the machine with swarf conveyor, the last figure being the height, and a spindle centre height of 1,080 mm. This spindle size is listed at 6,700 kg (14,771 lb) with the conveyor. The coolant tank holds 300 L. A note on the brochure's dimension drawing says it applies to the B620 ASA 6" only, so confirm the outline for this spindle with Biglia.
