Overview

Take the long bed of the B1250, add driven tools and a C-axis, and the result is the Biglia B1250M: a shaft lathe that can also drill and mill on the centreline. It offers 1,310 mm of Z travel, 305 mm of X and a machining length of 1,195 mm with a Ø 315 mm chuck.

Shaft work usually ends with a few features that are not round. A cross hole for a pin, a keyway, a drilled and tapped end face. On a two-axis lathe each of those is a trip to another machine, and a long shaft is awkward to re-fixture. Here the turret does it in place. Its 16 or 12 stations can all be live, driven at 12/15 kW and 35/37 Nm, while the main spindle holds angle as a C-axis with a 0.001° minimum programmable value.

Support for the workpiece is the other half of the argument. The standard tailstock has a 115 mm quill with 150 mm of hydraulic stroke and is brought into position by the turret carriage, and Biglia lists a servo B-axis tailstock with 1,140 mm of positioning as the alternative. An automatic steady-rest for shafts up to 240 mm in diameter is an option on B1250 machines.

Spindle choice is between two ASA 8" units: 93/100 mm bar at 3,000 rpm with 800-1,014 Nm, or the optional 80 mm bar spindle at 3,200 rpm. There is no Y-axis on this version; the B1250Y adds 140 mm of it. Weight with swarf conveyor is 7,950 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the B1250M add to the B1250?

Rotary tools and a C-axis. The brochure lists the B1250M with rotary tools at 12/16 positions, a C-axis and the CNC automatic tailstock. Travels, spindles and tailstock choices are the same as on the B1250. Biglia lists the B1250M at 7,950 kg and the B1250 at 7,850 kg with swarf conveyor.

02 Is there a shorter version of the B1250M?

Yes, the B750M, which has the same X travel, turret and live tooling on a bed with 860 mm of Z travel and a 765 mm machining length, and which can also be ordered with an ASA 6" spindle at 4,500 rpm. The B1250M has 1,310 mm of Z travel and is offered with ASA 8" spindles only.

03 How is the tailstock moved on the B1250M?

The standard tailstock is positioned by the turret-holding carriage along the Z-axis, with 1,310 mm of automatic positioning; its 115 mm hydraulic quill then advances up to 150 mm to hold the part. The optional B-axis tailstock has its own servo motor and ballscrew, so position and thrust are controlled by the CNC independently of the turret.

04 What live tool speed should I plan for?

Plan for 6,000 rpm. The table prints 6,000 / (10,000) rpm, and a footnote in the brochure states that maximum spindle speed is limited to 6000 rpm by standard rotary tools. Power is listed as 12/15 kW and torque as 35/37 Nm.
