Overview

The Takamaz XT-8MY is the most capable single-spindle variant in Takamaz's XT-8 family, adding Y-axis travel to the live tooling turret for off-center milling, eccentric drilling, and complex feature machining that the XT-8M cannot reach. With 12 turret stations expandable to 24 tool positions, Y-axis travel of +35/-40 mm, and live tools spinning at 4,000 RPM, the XT-8MY turns a compact production lathe into a genuine multi-axis turn-mill center.

The main spindle delivers 15/11 kW at up to 4,000 RPM through a 100 mm bore, a meaningful power upgrade over the XT-8M that reflects the more demanding cutting operations the Y-axis capability enables. The C-axis on the spindle works in concert with the Y-axis to position milling tools at any point across the workpiece face, enabling complex pocket machining, off-center hole patterns, and contoured features.

Axis travels of 175 mm on X, 420 mm on Z, and +35/-40 mm on Y provide a three-dimensional working envelope that covers most small complex parts. Rapid traverse rates of 18 m/min on X, 24 m/min on Z, and 10 m/min on Y keep cycle times competitive. The 12-station turret with 24-position tool magazine means the machine rarely needs a tool change mid-program, even on complex parts with many features.

The integrated gantry loader maintains lights-out capability despite the added complexity. The compact 1,780 x 1,685 mm footprint is only slightly larger than the XT-8M, making the XT-8MY the highest-capability option in the XT family without significantly increasing floor space requirements. The Fanuc 0i-TF Plus control handles multi-axis interpolation for simultaneous turning and milling operations.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Y-axis travel enables off-center milling, eccentric drilling, and complex features impossible on X-Z-only machines
  • 15/11 kW spindle delivers more cutting power than the XT-8M for demanding turn-mill operations
  • 24-position tool magazine means complex multi-feature parts rarely need mid-program tool changes
  • Compact 1,780 x 1,685 mm footprint delivers Y-axis turn-mill capability in minimal floor space
  • Integrated gantry loader maintains lights-out automation despite the added Y-axis complexity
  • 4,000 RPM live tools with 20 mm capacity handle a wide range of cross-drilling and milling operations

Limitations

  • Y-axis travel of +35/-40 mm is relatively limited compared to dedicated mill-turn machines offering +/-50 mm or more
  • Single-spindle design still requires a second operation or machine for back-end machining
  • Higher cost than XT-8 and XT-8M variants requires sufficient part complexity to justify the Y-axis investment
  • Limited Takamaz service infrastructure outside Japan compared to Mazak, Okuma, or DMG Mori

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Takamaz XT-8MY cost?

New Takamaz XT-8MY machines typically price between $140,000 and $200,000 with integrated gantry loader. The Y-axis and power upgrades add approximately $30,000-$40,000 over the XT-8M, justified when parts require off-center features that would otherwise need a separate milling operation.

02 What can the Y-axis do that the XT-8M cannot?

The Y-axis moves the turret perpendicular to the X-Z plane, enabling off-center drilling, eccentric bore machining, flat milling at any position across the workpiece face, and complex pocket operations. Without Y-axis, milling operations are limited to features centered on or tangent to the spindle axis.

03 How does the 24-position tool magazine work?

The 12-station turret uses dual tool holders at each station to accommodate 24 tools total. This allows both turning and milling tools to be loaded simultaneously without sacrificing capacity, critical for complex parts with many different features.

04 Is the XT-8MY suitable for medical device manufacturing?

Yes. The Y-axis capability, precision live tooling, and compact automation make the XT-8MY well-suited for medical components like bone screws, implant housings, and instrument parts that require precise off-center features on small turned blanks.
