Overview
The Takamaz XT-8M is the milling-capable variant of Takamaz's workhorse XT-8 compact CNC lathe, upgrading the turret to a 12-station configuration with live tooling at 4,000 RPM. This transforms the machine from a pure turning platform into a turn-mill solution capable of cross-drilling, tapping, flat milling, and hexagonal profiling without transferring parts to a secondary machine. For shops producing small turned parts that require a few milling or drilling operations, the XT-8M eliminates second-operation setups and the work-in-process inventory they generate.
The spindle delivers 11/7.5 kW with a maximum speed of 3,500 RPM (5,000 or 3,000 RPM optional) through a 100 mm bore (120 mm optional), providing the power and speed range for production turning of steel, aluminum, brass, and cast iron. The 12 live tool stations accommodate up to 12 power tools with a maximum tool diameter of 20 mm, giving the machine genuine milling capability for cross-holes, flats, and other off-center features.
Axis travels of 190 mm on X and 420 mm on Z provide a generous working envelope relative to the machine's compact 1,750 x 1,535 mm footprint. Rapid traverse rates of 18 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z keep non-cutting time low. The integrated gantry loader handles automated loading and unloading, making the XT-8M a complete lights-out production cell for complex small parts.
The Fanuc 0i-TF Plus control manages both turning and milling operations from a single program, with Takamaz's conversational programming overlay available for quick setup of common part geometries. The C-axis on the main spindle provides angular positioning for milling operations, enabling precise placement of cross-holes and flats around the workpiece circumference.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 12-station live tooling turret at 4,000 RPM enables cross-drilling, tapping, and milling without secondary operations
- Compact 1,750 x 1,535 mm footprint delivers turn-mill capability in minimal floor space
- Integrated gantry loader provides lights-out automation for complex small parts
- 420 mm Z-axis travel handles longer shaft-type components than the standard XT-8
- C-axis on main spindle enables precise angular positioning for cross-hole and flat milling operations
- Fanuc 0i-TF Plus with conversational overlay simplifies turn-mill programming
Limitations
- 3,500 RPM standard spindle speed is lower than the XT-8 5,000 RPM option reducing surface speed on small diameters
- Live tool motor power is modest compared to dedicated mill-turn machines from Mazak or DMG Mori
- No sub-spindle means back-end operations still require manual re-chucking or a second machine
- Limited Takamaz service and support network outside Japan compared to major OEMs

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New Takamaz XT-8M machines typically price between $110,000 and $170,000 with the integrated gantry loader. The live tooling upgrade from the standard XT-8 adds approximately $20,000-$30,000 but eliminates secondary operations that would otherwise require a separate mill or drill press.
02
The XT-8M upgrades to a 12-station turret with live tooling capability at 4,000 RPM, adds C-axis for angular positioning, and extends Z-axis travel to 420 mm versus 400 mm. The standard XT-8 has an 8-station turret for turning tools only.
03
The 4,000 RPM live tools handle cross-drilling up to 20 mm, tapping M4-M16, flat milling, hexagonal profiling, and keyway cutting. The C-axis enables precise angular positioning for these operations. Heavy milling or large pocket operations are better suited to dedicated mill-turn machines.
04
The XT-8M handles turn-mill operations in the X-Z plane only. The XT-8MY adds Y-axis travel for off-center milling operations like eccentric drilling and complex pocket milling that the XT-8M cannot reach.
