Overview

The Takamaz AT-1 is a single-spindle, single-turret CNC precision lathe designed for mid-range production turning of parts up to approximately 200 mm in diameter. Available with both 6-inch and 8-inch chuck options plus collet capability, the AT-1 sits in a versatile sweet spot in the Takamaz lineup — offering more work envelope than their compact XT series while maintaining the automation-ready DNA that defines every Takamaz machine.

Powered by a 7.5/5.5 kW spindle motor turning at up to 4,500 RPM, the AT-1 delivers solid cutting performance on steel, aluminum, cast iron, and brass at production feeds. The 8-station turret handles typical OD/ID turning, facing, grooving, and threading operations efficiently, while the 175 mm X-axis and 330 mm Z-axis travel provide a generous work envelope for a machine in this class. Rapid traverse rates of 18 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z keep non-cutting time short.

One of the AT-1's distinguishing features is its optional tailstock configuration, which expands the machine's capability to include shaft-type work requiring between-centers support. Without the tailstock, the full 175 mm X-travel is available for chucking work. The Takamaz and Mitsubishi control system includes a 15-inch LCD touch panel monitor that provides clear visualization of programs and machine status, along with idle stop functionality and power consumption monitoring for energy-conscious production environments.

The AT-1 is built for integration into automated production cells. Compatible with Takamaz's range of gantry loaders, the machine transitions smoothly from attended operation during setup and prove-out to unattended production running. The compact footprint of approximately 1,810 x 1,690 mm means multiple AT-1 machines can be arranged in tight cell configurations without consuming excessive floor space.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Versatile chuck sizing with 6-inch, 8-inch, and collet options covers a broad range of part diameters
  • Optional tailstock configuration expands capability to shaft-type work requiring between-centers support
  • 330 mm Z-axis travel provides generous turning length for a compact production lathe
  • 15-inch LCD touch panel with idle stop and power monitoring supports energy-efficient operation
  • Compact 1.8 x 1.7 meter footprint enables high-density cell configurations
  • Mitsubishi control platform offers robust programming and reliable performance

Limitations

  • 4,500 RPM spindle speed is moderate compared to higher-speed compact lathes from competitors
  • 8-station turret limits tool capacity for complex parts requiring many tool changes
  • No live tooling capability restricts the machine to pure turning operations
  • Limited brand recognition outside Japan makes parts sourcing and resale values uncertain in Western markets

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Takamaz AT-1 cost?

New Takamaz AT-1 machines typically price between $100,000 and $160,000 depending on chuck configuration, tailstock option, and gantry loader. Used machines in good condition trade in the $40,000-$75,000 range.

02 What control system does the AT-1 use?

The AT-1 uses a Takamaz and Mitsubishi control system with a 15-inch LCD touch panel monitor. It includes idle stop functionality and power consumption monitoring as standard features.

03 Can the AT-1 handle bar feeding?

The AT-1's spindle bore accommodates bar stock, and Takamaz offers compatible bar feeder integration. The collet chuck option is particularly well-suited for bar-fed production of smaller diameter parts.

04 How does the AT-1 compare to the Takamaz XT-8?

The AT-1 offers a larger work envelope with 330 mm Z-travel versus 120 mm on the XT-8, plus tailstock capability. The XT-8 is faster for small parts under 80 mm diameter, while the AT-1 handles a broader range of part sizes and configurations.
