Takamaz AT-1

The Takamaz AT-1 is a compact single-spindle chucking lathe with an 8-station turret, 160 mm (6.3 in) of X travel, 330 mm (13 in) of Z travel and a spindle that runs to 4,500 rpm on a 7.5 / 5.5 kW rating. It is a machine for small turned parts made in long batches, loaded by an operator or by the optional gantry loader.

Much of the AT-1 is decided when it is ordered. The tailstock is optional, and fitting one stretches the machine from 1,810 mm to 1,945 mm in length; without it the footprint is 1,810 x 1,690 x 1,500 mm (71.3 x 66.5 x 59.1 in). Workholding is also an option: the table shows no standard chuck and lists collet chucking and chuck sizes 6 and 8 as optional attachments. With 330 mm of Z and a tailstock on the list, the AT-1 can support short shafts as well as chucked parts, but the table gives no maximum turning diameter or length, so check the largest part against Takamaz's drawings before committing a job.

The spindle runs on bearings with an inner diameter of Ø85 mm, and its centre line sits 960 mm (37.8 in) above the floor. That height is what an operator reaches for on every manual load, so it is worth comparing with the existing machines in a cell. Rapid traverse is 18 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z, which keeps the moves between cuts short on a part that only needs a few seconds of cutting.

The GSL-15 PLUS shares the AT-1's 160 mm X and 330 mm Z strokes, its 7.5 / 5.5 kW rating and its 8-station turret, but tops out at 3,500 rpm. The AT-1's 4,500 rpm is the reason to pick it for smaller diameters, where spindle speed rather than power is what limits the cut.
