Overview

The Johnford ST-130DH is a three-metre lathe for large forged shafts: 3,050 mm (120.1 in) of Z travel, 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide, and the D spindle on its 240 mm (9.4 in) bearing.

Forgings come to the lathe with scale, uneven stock and sometimes an interrupted surface. Removing that is slow, heavy cutting at low speed, and the specification is consistent with it. The spindle turns at 1,000 rpm at most. It has four automatic speeds and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), or 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) as an option. A geared headstock is listed as an alternative to the belt-type gearbox, with a 176 mm (6.9 in) bore instead of 185 mm (7.3 in).

Both ends of the part are held on large elements. The chuck is 510 mm (20.1 in) or 610 mm (24 in) on an A2-15 nose; the tailstock quill is Ø200 mm (7.9 in) with MT#7 and 2,750 mm (108.3 in) of body travel.

The X and Z servo motors are 7 kW and X travel is 420 mm (16.5 in). Weight is 20,600 kg (45,320 lb), the highest of the three-metre models on this frame, and length 8,612 mm (339.1 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the ST-130DH suited to roughing forgings?

Its figures point that way: 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) or 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp), four automatic speeds, 1,000 rpm, a 240 mm (9.4 in) spindle bearing and a belt-type gearbox described as being for heavy-duty cutting.

02 What holds the part on the ST-130DH?

A 510 mm (20.1 in) hydraulic chuck, or a 610 mm (24 in) one, and a programmable tailstock with a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill that travels 2,750 mm (108.3 in). Steady rests are optional.

03 How does the ST-130DH compare with the ST-130BH?

The ST-130BH has the A2-11 spindle with 2,000 rpm, a 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), at 20,200 kg (44,440 lb). The ST-130DH has 1,000 rpm, a 185 mm (7.3 in) bore and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), at 20,600 kg (45,320 lb).

04 What are the dimensions of the ST-130DH?

8,612 x 2,504 x 2,955 mm (339.1 x 98.6 x 116.3 in). Swing over the bed is 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and the bed is inclined at 60°.
