Overview
The Takamaz XTT-500 is a twin-turret CNC lathe designed for high-throughput production turning where simultaneous cutting on both turrets slashes cycle times on parts with multiple features. Unlike Takamaz's twin-spindle XW and XWT models that machine both ends of a part, the XTT-500 uses two turrets working simultaneously on a single spindle to double the number of operations performed per revolution. This architecture excels on parts requiring independent roughing and finishing, or simultaneous OD and ID operations.
The main spindle delivers 15/11 kW at up to 4,000 RPM (3,500 RPM optional) through a 100 mm bore (120 mm optional), providing ample power for aggressive dual-turret cutting. Each of the two 8-station turrets operates independently with 105 mm X-travel and 450 mm Z-travel. The extended Z-stroke accommodates longer parts than the standard XT-8, expanding the XTT-500's application range to include shaft-type components and elongated fittings.
Rapid traverse rates of 18 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z keep both turrets moving efficiently between cuts. The Fanuc 0i-TF control manages dual-turret synchronization, allowing programmers to overlap roughing on one turret with finishing on the other, or run simultaneous OD turning and ID boring to cut cycle time nearly in half compared to single-turret machines.
The 8-inch collet chuck (10-inch optional) and integrated gantry loader maintain Takamaz's automation-first philosophy. The 1,695 x 1,830 mm footprint delivers twin-turret capability in a package that occupies only slightly more floor space than a single-turret XT-8. For shops producing moderate to high volumes of parts with multiple turning features, the XTT-500 offers a compelling alternative to larger and more expensive twin-spindle machines.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Twin-turret architecture enables simultaneous cutting to reduce cycle times by up to 50% on multi-feature parts
- 15/11 kW spindle power handles aggressive dual-turret cutting on steel and cast iron without bogging down
- 450 mm Z-axis travel per turret accommodates longer shaft-type components than standard XT-8 models
- Compact 1,695 x 1,830 mm footprint delivers twin-turret capability without consuming excessive floor space
- Integrated gantry loader maintains lights-out automation capability
- Independent turret control enables overlapped roughing and finishing or simultaneous OD and ID operations
Limitations
- Twin-turret interference management requires careful programming to avoid collisions between turrets
- 8-station turrets per side offer limited tool capacity for highly complex parts
- Single-spindle design still requires second operation for back-end machining on both-end parts
- Limited Takamaz dealer network outside Japan restricts service and support options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New Takamaz XTT-500 machines price between $130,000 and $190,000 depending on spindle configuration and tooling options. The twin-turret design costs more than the single-turret XT-8 but delivers significant cycle time reductions on parts with multiple features.
02
Both turrets cut simultaneously on the same workpiece. For example, one turret can rough the OD while the other bores the ID, or one can rough while the other follows with a finishing pass. This overlap can reduce cycle times by 30-50% compared to sequential single-turret machining.
03
The XTT-500 is the standard turning-only version with 8-station turrets. The XTT-500M adds live tooling capability with 4 power tool positions for cross-drilling and milling operations on top of the twin-turret turning capability.
04
The XW-130 has two spindles for machining both ends of a part. The XTT-500 has two turrets on one spindle for faster machining of one end. Choose the XW-130 for complete both-end parts; choose the XTT-500 for maximum cycle time reduction on single-end parts.
