Overview

The Takamaz XT-8 is a compact high-speed CNC lathe designed specifically for mass production of small turned parts up to 80 mm in diameter. Takamaz built the XT series around a single obsession: minimizing chip-to-chip time while maintaining tight tolerances on simple to moderately complex turned parts. The XT-8 delivers cycle times that make production planners smile, with rapid traverses and turret indexing speeds that keep non-cutting time to an absolute minimum.

The 8-inch chuck and 5,000 RPM spindle provide the speed and work-holding stability needed for high-volume turning of automotive components like valve bodies, bearing races, and hydraulic fittings. The rigid box-way construction on the X-axis combined with linear guideways on the Z-axis gives the machine a solid foundation for consistent part quality across long production runs. Spindle power of 11 kW handles steel, aluminum, and cast iron at production feeds without bogging down.

Like all Takamaz lathes, the XT-8 is designed from the ground up for automation. An integrated gantry loader handles part loading and unloading with minimal cycle interruption, and the machine's chip management system keeps the work zone clean for reliable unattended operation. The compact footprint means you can line up multiple XT-8 machines in a cell configuration for high-volume production lines without consuming excessive floor space.

The Fanuc 0i-TF control keeps things simple and reliable. Takamaz provides their own conversational programming overlay for common part geometries, reducing setup time for families of similar parts. The 8-station turret covers most simple turning operations, and for shops that need more tool positions, Takamaz offers the XT-8M variant with a 12-station turret and live tooling capability.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Extremely fast chip-to-chip times make it one of the most productive compact lathes for simple turned parts
  • Integrated gantry loader as standard equipment enables lights-out production immediately
  • Compact footprint under 2 square meters allows high-density cell configurations for volume production
  • Hybrid guideway design (box-way X, linear Z) balances rigidity with speed for consistent part quality
  • Lower acquisition cost than competing automated lathes from Mazak, DMG Mori, or Okuma
  • Fanuc 0i-TF control with Takamaz conversational overlay simplifies programming for common part families

Limitations

  • 80 mm max turning diameter severely limits the machine to small parts only
  • 8-station turret without live tooling restricts the machine to pure turning operations
  • No tailstock option means shaft-type work requiring between-centers support is not possible
  • Limited brand recognition outside Japan makes resale values unpredictable in Western markets
  • 80 mm max turning length eliminates longer components from the machine's capability envelope

Best For

High-volume automotive production of small turned parts like valve seats, bushings, and spacers Mass production of hydraulic and pneumatic fittings in steel, brass, and aluminum Bearing industry shops turning inner and outer races in hardened steel Production cells requiring multiple identical machines for parallel high-volume output Shops seeking the lowest possible cost-per-part on simple small-diameter turned components Facilities transitioning from manual or cam-operated automatics to CNC turning with automation

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Takamaz XT-8 cost?

New Takamaz XT-8 machines typically price between $90,000 and $140,000 with the integrated gantry loader. The XT-8M with live tooling runs approximately $20,000-$30,000 higher. Used machines trade in the $35,000-$70,000 range.

02 What is the difference between the Takamaz XT-8 and XT-8M?

The XT-8 has an 8-station turret for turning tools only. The XT-8M upgrades to a 12-station turret with live tooling capability, adding cross-drilling and milling operations. The XT-8M costs more but eliminates secondary operations on parts requiring off-center features.

03 Can the XT-8 run without the gantry loader?

Yes, the machine can operate in manual chuck load mode. However, the XT-8 is fundamentally designed for automated production, and running it manually significantly reduces its throughput advantage over conventional lathes.

04 How does the XT-8 compare to a Citizen Miyano fixed-head lathe?

Both target high-volume small parts. The Miyano BNA series offers more flexibility with sub-spindle options and C-axis, while the XT-8 focuses on maximizing throughput on simpler parts. The XT-8 typically has a lower acquisition cost and faster cycle times on basic turning operations.

05 What materials can the XT-8 handle?

The 11 kW spindle handles carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and cast iron at production feeds. For hardened materials above 45 HRC, the machine can perform finish turning but roughing rates will be limited by the available power.
