Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STB-50 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
A 51.97 in (1320 mm) swing over the bed and 35.43 in (900 mm) over the cross slide define the Sharp STB-50, the middle size of the STB big bore flat bed CNC lathes. It is aimed at work that is both large in diameter and heavy: flanged pipe, rolls, big couplings.
Compare the two swing figures before anything else. The gap between them is the height the carriage takes up, and anything longer than the chuck jaws can hold alone has to fit under the lower one. Against the STA-50, which clears 37.79 in (960 mm) over its cross slide, the STB-50 gives up a little of that room in exchange for a 31.89 in (810 mm) bed in place of a 24 in (610 mm) one.
Weights need a second look. Sharp's table prints 36,600 lb (16,600 kg) for both the STB-50120 and the STB-50160, while every other step in the row climbs with bed length, starting at 32,600 lb (14,800 kg) on the shortest bed and ending at 44,500 lb (20,200 kg) on the longest. Ask for the shipping weight of the bed you are buying before sizing a foundation or a crane.
Drive and travel follow the rest of the line. X travel is 23.62 in (600 mm). Ball screws are 1.57 in (40 mm) on X and 2.48 in (63 mm) on Z, and the standard accessory list calls them C3 grade with Turcite-B on the slideways.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 51.97 in (1320 mm) swing over the bed, 35.43 in (900 mm) over the cross slide
- 2.48 in (63 mm) Z-axis ball screw, listed as C3 grade
- Turcite-B on the X and Z slideways as standard
- Bores of 6 in (152 mm) to 15 in (380 mm) in the table
- Six beds up to 236.22 in (6,000 mm) between centers
Limitations
- The weight row repeats 36,600 lb (16,600 kg) for two different bed lengths
- Cross slide clearance is below the 37.79 in (960 mm) of the STA-50
- X travel of 23.62 in (600 mm) is less than half the swing
- Turrets, rear chuck adapter and spindle chiller are all optional

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Maximum swing over the bed is 51.97 in (1320 mm) and swing over the cross slide is 35.43 in (900 mm). The first applies to short work held at the chuck, the second to anything the carriage has to travel under.
02
Sharp's weight row gives 36,600 lb (16,600 kg) for the STB-50120 and again for the STB-50160. The STB-5080 is listed at 33,900 lb (15,400 kg) and the STB-50200 is listed at 41,900 lb (19,000 kg), so one of the two repeated entries is likely a misprint. Confirm it with Sharp.
03
It depends on diameter over the slide and on load. The STA-50 clears 37.79 in (960 mm) over the cross slide and has a 24 in (610 mm) bed; the STB-50 clears 35.43 in (900 mm) on a 31.89 in (810 mm) bed. Swing over the bed and X travel, 51.97 in (1320 mm) and 23.62 in (600 mm), are the same on both.
04
A manual tailstock, MT 6, is on the standard accessory list. Two upgrades are optional accessories: a tailstock with hydraulic quill, and a tailstock base with hydraulic lock bolt for clamping along the bed.
