Overview
The Mazak MEGA TURN 500M is the Ø20 in (508 mm) MEGA TURN with driven tools: Mazak's model list gives its configuration as Milling, and the table adds a rotary-tool spindle that runs to 4,000 rpm alongside the 3,000 rpm turning spindle. Nothing about the envelope changes from the MEGA TURN 500. X travel is still 14 in (356 mm), Z travel 20 in (508 mm), table load 1,102 lb (500 kg), and even the machine weight is the same 20,392 lb (9,250 kg).
The rotary-tool motor is small beside the main one. It is rated 5.5 kW (7 HP) continuous and 7.5 kW (10 HP) at a 10%ED rating, with a maximum torque of 70 ft-lb (95 Nm) on that same 10%ED basis. The turning spindle is rated 22 kW (30 HP) continuous, 26 kW (35 HP) (40% ED) and 596 ft-lb (808 Nm) (15%ED). Stock removal therefore belongs to turning, and the driven tools are there to drill and mill the features that would otherwise send the part to a second machine. That is the argument Mazak makes for milling in the series: turning and milling of large cylindrical parts combined on one machine.
Two things are worth settling with Mazak before ordering. The table gives 12 tools for the turret, a 1 in (25 mm) tool shank height and Ø2 in (51 mm) boring bars, but it does not say how many of the 12 positions drive a rotary tool. It also has no Y-axis row, and the configuration on the model list is Milling alone, so features away from the centreline need checking against how the machine positions the work.
Mazak quotes a 73 in (1,854 mm) × 94 in (2,388 mm) footprint with MAZATROL SmoothEz, under a height of 118 in (2,997 mm). Rapids are 1,181 ipm (30 m/min) in X and Z, and mirror-image versions are available for this size.
