Overview

The Mazak MEGA TURN 500M is the milling-equipped variant of the MEGA TURN 500 vertical turning center, adding a milling spindle for done-in-one processing of medium-diameter parts up to 500 mm (19.69 in). The 500M eliminates the need to move parts from a VTL to a machining center for secondary drilling, tapping, and milling operations.

The MEGA TURN 500M shares the same vertical turning platform as the base 500: maximum machining diameter of 500 mm (19.69 in) with a turning height of 462 mm (18.19 in), slightly more than the base model to accommodate the milling turret geometry. Chuck sizes range from 12 to 18 inches. The main spindle delivers 22 kW (30 hp) at up to 2,000 RPM.

The key differentiator is the integrated milling spindle with C-axis capability. This enables cross-drilling, tapping, bolt-hole circle patterns, keyway cutting, and contour milling directly on the vertical turning center. The milling spindle runs at up to 6,000 RPM with approximately 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) for secondary operations. The C-axis provides precise angular indexing for feature placement.

Available in standard (500M) and short-bed (500MS) configurations, the MEGA TURN 500M provides the same floor space efficiency as other vertical turners while adding mill-turn capability. MAZATROL SmoothG handles both turning and milling programming.

The MEGA TURN 500M competes with the Okuma V560M, Doosan Puma V400M, and DMG Mori CTV 250M. New machines price between $220,000 and $330,000. The 500M is ideal for shops producing medium-diameter parts with both turned and drilled/milled features.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Milling spindle with C-axis enables complete processing of parts with drilled holes, tapped features, and milled flats in one setup
  • Vertical orientation provides gravity-assisted loading and excellent chip evacuation
  • Compact footprint uses 30-40% less floor space than horizontal mill-turn alternatives
  • 6,000 RPM milling spindle handles drilling, tapping, and light contouring operations efficiently
  • Eliminates secondary machining center operation and associated part handling on medium-diameter work
  • MAZATROL SmoothG integrates turning and milling programming in one conversational interface

Limitations

  • 500 mm max diameter limits part size; larger work requires MEGA TURN 600M or 900M
  • $40K-$50K premium over base MEGA TURN 500 for milling capability adds cost for pure turning work
  • 5.5 kW milling power limits heavy milling operations; not a substitute for a machining center
  • Requires overhead crane for loading parts beyond manual lifting weight

Best For

Automotive manufacturers producing brake components, hubs, and flanges with bolt-hole patterns Hydraulic component shops turning and drilling pump housings and motor casings in one setup Aerospace ring and spacer production requiring turned features plus drilled bolt holes Job shops needing a compact mill-turn VTL for mixed production of medium-diameter parts Shops wanting done-in-one processing on 12-18 inch chuck parts without the cost of an INTEGREX

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Mazak MEGA TURN 500M cost?

New pricing runs $220,000-$330,000 depending on configuration. The 500MS short-bed variant is at the lower end. The milling upgrade adds approximately $40,000-$50,000 over the base MEGA TURN 500.

02 MEGA TURN 500M vs 500MS: what is the difference?

The 500MS has a shorter Z-axis stroke optimized for short parts. Both have the same turning diameter and milling capability. Choose 500MS for shorter parts and smaller floor space requirement.

03 What milling operations can the 500M perform?

Cross-drilling, tapping, bolt-hole circles, keyway cutting, flat milling, and contouring with the 6,000 RPM milling spindle and C-axis. For heavy 3D milling, an INTEGREX or dedicated machining center is still needed.

04 MEGA TURN 500M vs INTEGREX i-200: which to choose?

The INTEGREX i-200 is a full 5-axis mill-turn with B-axis milling spindle for complex 3D work. The MEGA TURN 500M has C-axis only, suitable for drilling, tapping, and positioning. The MEGA TURN costs $100K-$200K less and is simpler to program.
