How much does the Sharp STA-44 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STA-44 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Five spindle bores are listed for the Sharp STA-44, and that choice is the first thing to settle when specifying it. This 44.09 in (1120 mm) swing flat bed CNC lathe can be built with a bore of 6 in (152 mm), 9 in (230 mm), 10 in (255 mm), 12 in (305 mm) or 15 in (380 mm). Sharp's overview names the 6" bore as standard.
The bore decides what can be chucked through the headstock, and it also decides the chuck, the rear adapter and the steady rests that go with the machine. None of those is fixed in the standard list. Chucks, face plates and rests are all offered in different sizes as options, so two STA-44 lathes can leave the factory as quite different machines.
Over the cross slide the swing is 29.92 in (760 mm), and X travel is 23.62 in (600 mm), more than the 18.89 in (480 mm) of the STA-38. The bed is the same 24 in (610 mm) wide casting with 2 V and 2 flat ways, in six lengths from 59.06 in (1,500 mm) to 236.22 in (6,000 mm) between centers. Z travel runs from 41.34 in (1,050 mm) to 218.5 in (5,550 mm).
A 30 hp motor drives the spindle through four automatically changed speed steps, with 40 hp or 50 hp as options. Weights start at 26,700 lb (12,111 kg) for the STA-4460 and reach 36,600 lb (16,601 kg) for the STA-44240. The enclosure is 107.7 in (2,735 mm) wide and 89.4 in (2,270 mm) high.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The table lists 6 in (152 mm), 9 in (230 mm), 10 in (255 mm), 12 in (305 mm) and 15 in (380 mm). Sharp's overview describes the 6" bore as standard and the others as further sizes for different materials. Double chucks are available for holding extra long and large pipes.
02
Swing over the bed is 44.09 in (1120 mm) against 37.79 in (960 mm) on the STA-38, swing over the cross slide 29.92 in (760 mm) against 23.62 in (600 mm), and X travel 23.62 in against 18.89 in (480 mm). The STA-44 also adds the larger bore choices. Bed width and bed lengths are the same.
03
X-axis travel is 23.62 in (600 mm), though Sharp notes that it varies with the turret installed. Z-axis travel depends on bed length: 41.34 in (1,050 mm) on the STA-4460, rising to 218.5 in (5,550 mm) on the STA-44240. The Z-axis ball screw is 2.48 in (63 mm) in diameter.
04
Turrets are options. Sharp lists a hydraulic 4-way turret and hydraulic V-8 and V-12 turrets among the optional accessories for the STA series, along with a boring attachment. Because X travel varies with the turret, choose the turret before judging the largest diameter that can be faced.
