Overview
At 59.84 in (1520 mm) over the bed, the Sharp STB-60 is a big bore flat bed CNC lathe for flanges, rings and pipe too large for the STB-55. Swing over the cross slide is 43.31 in (1100 mm), and the headstock is raised to suit: machine height goes to 91.3 in (2,320 mm), the first STB size above the 89.4 in (2,270 mm) of the STB-55.
Nothing about the drive grows with the swing. The spindle motor is the same 30 hp unit, with 40 hp or 50 hp optional, and the gearbox changes through four speed steps by M code. On a 59.84 in part the surface speed at the rim is high even at low rpm, so the practical question for a buyer is torque at the bottom of the range. Sharp's table gives no spindle speed or torque figures; ask for the speed chart of each gear step.
The STA-60 offers the same bed swing on a 24 in (610 mm) bed with 45.66 in (1160 mm) over the cross slide. The STB-60 trades some of that clearance for a 31.89 in (810 mm) bed and 27.56 in (700 mm) of X travel; X travel on the STA-60 is 23.62 in (600 mm).
Lengths run from the STB-6060 at 59.06 in (1,500 mm) between centers to the STB-60240 at 236.22 in (6,000 mm), and weights from 34,600 lb (15,700 kg) to 46,500 lb (21,100 kg).
