How much does the Sharp STA-50 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STA-50 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Sharp STA-50 swings 51.97 in (1320 mm) over the bed and 37.79 in (960 mm) over the cross slide. It is the middle of the five STA big bore CNC lathes and the first whose headstock is raised enough to change the height of the machine, to 93.3 in (2,370 mm).
How is the extra swing obtained? Not by a wider bed. The ways are still 24 in (610 mm) across, 2 V and 2 flat, and the X axis still travels 23.62 in (600 mm). Sharp raises the centerline instead. The result suits work that is large in diameter but not especially heavy in the cut: flanges, rings, pipe ends and housings that only need clearance. For interrupted roughing at the full 51.97 in, bear in mind that the tool sits a long way above a bed of this width.
Spindle bores run from 6 in (152 mm) to 15 in (380 mm) in five sizes, and the motor is 30 hp with 40 hp or 50 hp optional. Sharp describes a three-point spindle support, one ball bearing and two tapered roller bearings, and gears of hardened and ground alloy steel.
Six lengths are offered. The STA-5060 has 59.06 in (1,500 mm) between centers and weighs 28,200 lb (12,971 kg); the STA-50240 has 236.22 in (6,000 mm) and weighs 38,100 lb (17,282 kg). Machine width is 107.7 in (2,735 mm). Length with the chip conveyor ranges from 208.5 in (5,295 mm) to 385.6 in (9,795 mm).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 51.97 in (1320 mm) swing over the bed, 37.79 in (960 mm) over the cross slide
- Five bore sizes from 6 in (152 mm) to 15 in (380 mm)
- Three-point spindle support with two tapered roller bearings and one ball bearing
- Heat exchanger and full enclosure splash guard listed for the series
- Z-axis ball screw of 2.48 in (63 mm) on every bed length
Limitations
- The extra swing comes from a higher centerline over the same 24 in (610 mm) bed
- X travel is 23.62 in (600 mm), short of half the swing diameter
- At 93.3 in (2,370 mm) it is taller than the STA-44
- Turrets are optional and alter the usable X travel

Frequently Asked Questions
01
51.97 in (1320 mm) over the bed and 37.79 in (960 mm) over the cross slide. Sharp's overview rounds the swing over bedways to 50". X-axis travel is 23.62 in (600 mm) and varies with the turret installed.
02
From 28,200 lb (12,971 kg) for the STA-5060 version to 38,100 lb (17,282 kg) for the STA-50240, depending on bed length. The STA-44 on the same bed is lighter, starting at 26,700 lb (12,111 kg).
03
No. Width of bed is 24 in (610 mm), with 2 V and 2 flat ways, as on the STA-38 and STA-44. Sharp describes the bedways as induction hardened and ground and the bed and base as one casting. The machine is taller at 93.3 in (2,370 mm).
04
The control is a FANUC Oi-TF. Standard accessories include an X/Z axes auto lubrication system, a coolant system, a flat belt conveyor and automatic change between the 4 spindle speed steps. The X and Z slideways carry Turcite-B.
