Sharp STF-55 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Sharp STF-55 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Sharp or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

Choosing among Sharp's STF facing lathes comes down to one question: how big is the largest part? The STF-55 answers it with 55.91 in (1420 mm) of swing over the bed and 35.43 in (900 mm) over the cross slide. Almost every other row in its table is shared with the sizes on either side.

The shared rows are worth listing once. Bed width is 31.88 in (810 mm) and bed length 128.54 in (3265 mm). X travel is 25.59 in (650 mm), Z travel 39.37 in (1000 mm). Ball screws are 1.57 in (40 mm) and 2.48 in (63 mm), both axes have 5.3 hp servos, and the spindle motor is 30 hp. Buying a larger STF does not buy a stiffer bed or a stronger drive.

What changes is the height of the spindle above the bed, and with it the machine: the STF-55 is 89.17 in (2,265 mm) high and weighs 22,500 lb (10,200 kg). The STF-50 is listed at 87.20 in (2,215 mm) and 21,800 lb (9,900 kg).

So size the machine to the work, with a margin for the chuck jaws, and no further. A part that sits near the 51.97 in (1320 mm) limit of the STF-50 runs with clearance to spare here.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 55.91 in (1420 mm) swing over the bed
  • 35.43 in (900 mm) swing over the cross slide
  • 25.59 in (650 mm) of X-axis travel for facing
  • 5.3 hp Fanuc AC servos on both axes
  • 22,500 lb (10,200 kg), far lighter than a long-bed lathe of the same swing

Limitations

  • Bed, travels and motors are no larger than on the STF-50
  • No tailstock, so every part hangs from the chuck
  • X travel is now less than half the swing
  • Height of 89.17 in (2,265 mm)

Best For

Chucking work too large for the STF-50, up to 55.91 in swing Flange and ring facing with 25.59 in of X travel Large valve and pump housings Pipe ends with bores up to 15 in

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the swing of the STF-55?

55.91 in (1420 mm) over the bed and 35.43 in (900 mm) over the cross slide. For comparison the STF-50 swings 51.97 in (1320 mm) and 31.50 in (800 mm), and the STF-60 swings 59.84 in (1520 mm) and 39.37 in (1000 mm).

02 Is the STF-55 more powerful than the smaller STF models?

No. Every STF table lists the same 30 hp spindle motor with 40 hp or 50 hp optional, 5.3 hp servo motors on X and Z, a 2 hp (1.5 kW) hydraulic pump and a 1.7 hp (1.27 kW) coolant pump. Only swing, height and weight grow.

03 How long a part can the STF-55 machine?

Z-axis travel is 39.37 in (1000 mm), and there is no tailstock, so the part is held by the chuck alone. Usable length depends on the chuck, the jaws and how far the tool has to reach; the bed itself is 128.54 in (3265 mm) long.

04 What does the STF-55 weigh?

22,500 lb (10,200 kg). The machine is 102.76 in (2,610 mm) wide and 89.17 in (2,265 mm) high. The STB-55, a long-bed lathe with nearly the same swing, is listed at 33,700 lb (15,300 kg) with its shortest bed.
