We do not have a price for the Sharp STC-38 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Roll turning is the job the Sharp STC-38 is laid out for. It is the smallest of the STC extra heavy duty big bore CNC lathes, with a 37.79 in (960 mm) swing, and Sharp's table gives it a row no general lathe has: a maximum roll cutting diameter of 32.68 in (830 mm) and a minimum of 4.72 in (120 mm).
The bed explains the name. It is 49.21 in (1250 mm) wide, the table describes its construction as multiple guides, and the cross slide and tailstock travel on different bedways. Two things follow. Cutting load from the carriage and clamping load from the tailstock go into separate ways, and the carriage is not stopped by the tailstock body, which is why Z-axis travel equals the full distance between centers on every length. On the STB-38 the Z travel is shorter than the center distance.
Four lengths are listed. The STC-3880 has 78.74 in (2,000 mm) between centers, then come 118.11 in (3,000 mm), 157.48 in (4,000 mm) and 196.85 in (5,000 mm). X-axis travel is short at 15.75 in (400 mm), which suits work on a roll's outside diameter more than facing.
It is heavy for its swing. The STC-3880 weighs 34,100 lb (15,500 kg) and the STC-38200 weighs 47,400 lb (21,500 kg). Spindle bore is 6 in (152 mm) and the motor is 30 hp, with 40 hp or 50 hp optional.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Sharp lists a maximum roll cutting diameter of 32.68 in (830 mm) and a minimum of 4.72 in (120 mm) for the STC-38, under a 37.79 in (960 mm) swing over the bed. It is the range of outside diameters the cross slide can reach on a roll held between centers, given 15.75 in (400 mm) of X-axis travel.
02
Because the cross slide and the tailstock travel on different bedways, according to Sharp's feature list. The STC-38200, for example, has 196.85 in (5,000 mm) between centers and 196.85 in (5,000 mm) of Z-axis travel. On the STB-38 the longest bed has 236.22 in (6,000 mm) between centers but 222.44 in (5650 mm) of Z travel.
03
Sharp says different optional turret tool posts can be mounted on the cross slide: 4 way, 6 way, 8 and 12 position hydraulic or motorized tool holding devices. The accessory list names hydraulic 4-way, V-8 and V-12 turrets as options, and a boring attachment for a bar diameter of 120mm.
04
Length with the chip conveyor is 242.1 in (6,150 mm) for the shortest bed and 360.2 in (9,150 mm) for the longest, with 281.5 in (7,150 mm) and 320.9 in (8,150 mm) between. Height is 89.0 in (2,260 mm). Sharp's width row for this model is not consistent across the lengths, so ask for a layout drawing.
