Overview
The Haas TL-3B is the big-bore version of the TL-3 toolroom lathe. Its spindle has a 7.08 in (179.8 mm) bore, an A2-11 nose at the front and the rear, and 7 in (178 mm) of bar capacity, on a bed with 63 in (1,600 mm) between centers.
The drive differs from the TL-3 as well as the bore. The TL-3 has a 30 hp (22.4 kW) spindle with 300 ft-lbf (407 N·m) at 500 rpm, 2,000 rpm and a 4.62 in (117.3 mm) bore. The TL-3B has 40 hp (29.8 kW) through a 2-speed gearbox, 1,400 ft-lbf (1,898 N·m) at 150 rpm and a 1,300 rpm limit. That is more than four times the torque, delivered at under a third of the speed, which is the right shape for large pipe and tube and the wrong one for small work.
A nose at both ends of the spindle means a chuck can be fitted at the rear as well as the front, so a long pipe passing through the bore is held at two points while its end is turned or threaded. The table lists a 20 in (508 mm) chuck as an option. Swing is 30 in (762 mm) over the front apron and 18 in (457 mm) over the cross slide.
Turning diameter is given three ways: 26 in as the headline figure, 30 in with a tool post and 21 in with the BOT turret. Turning length is 62 in (1,575 mm), or 61.5 in with the 8-station turret, which indexes in 1 s. X travel is 16 in (406 mm) and rapids are 450 ipm (11.4 m/min). The MT5 tailstock has a manual quill with 7 in of travel.
Coolant capacity is 45 gal (170 L). Air demand is 4 scfm at 100 psi (113.3 L/min at 6.9 bar), with supply pressure between 80 psi (5.5 bar) and 120 psi (8.3 bar). Power is 70 A at 220 VAC three-phase or 35 A at 440 VAC. Haas's starting price is US$79,995.
