Overview

The Sharp 1840TC-F is a flat bed CNC lathe of toolroom size: 18 in (457.2 mm) of swing over the bed, 39.4 in between centers and a 2.37 in spindle bore behind a D1-6 camlock nose. It is the smallest of Sharp's TC-F lathes.

Sharp sells it as a machine an operator can run three ways. It works as a manual lathe through electronic handwheels on X and Z, as a full CNC lathe programmed in M code or G code, or semi automatically with the two mixed. That makes it a teach-and-repeat machine for one-offs, repairs and short runs, where the operator turns a diameter by hand and lets the control cut the thread or the radius.

The headstock is geared, with 3 steps and automatic speed change, and the motor is a Fanuc 10 hp (7.45 kW) unit. Sharp's overview quotes 14-2,500 rpm for the range; the specification table on the same page prints a different lower limit, so the bottom speed is worth confirming if large-diameter work at low rpm matters. Swing over the cross slide is 9 in (228.6 mm) and cross travel 10.63 in (270 mm).

Tooling is simple. A 4-way programmable tool post is standard, and a hydraulic 8 position turret with 4 internal holders and 4 external wedges is an option. No chuck appears on the standard list: 8" and 10" three-jaw chucks are options. The tailstock is manual with an MT #5 center and 6.31 in of quill travel. Weight is 5,732 lb.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Can the 1840TC-F be used like a manual lathe?

Yes. Sharp states that it can operate as a manual lathe with electronic handwheels, as a full CNC lathe with programmable speed using M code or G code language, or semi automatically, combining manual and CNC operations. An electronic handwheel (MPG) for the X and Z axes is a standard accessory.

02 What is the capacity of the 1840TC-F?

Swing over the bed is 18 in (457.2 mm) and swing over the cross slide 9 in (228.6 mm). Distance between centers is 39.4 in. The spindle bore is 2.37 in (60.19 mm) with a D1-6 camlock nose, and the bed is 14.5 in (368.3 mm) wide and 82.5 in long.

03 Does the 1840TC-F have a turret?

Not as standard. The standard accessory is a 4-way programmable tool post. Sharp lists a hydraulic 8 position turret with 4 x internal tool holder and 4 x external tool wedges as an option, along with a hydraulic tailstock in lieu of the manual one.

04 What threading can the 1840TC-F do?

Sharp lists inch and metric threading, left or right-hand, single or multiple-start. A spindle encoder is a standard accessory, and spindle speed is programmable across the 3 gear steps with automatic speed change.
