How much does the Sharp STB-38 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STB-38 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Sharp STB-38 is the smallest swing in the STB line of big bore flat bed CNC lathes, and the clearest way to describe it is against the STA-38 that shares its 37.79 in (960 mm) swing. The STB bed is 31.89 in (810 mm) wide where the STA-38 bed is 24 in (610 mm), and the weight follows: the STB-3860 is listed at 28,600 lb (13,000 kg) against 24,400 lb (11,068 kg) for the STA-3860.
That extra iron buys cross travel. X-axis travel is 23.62 in (600 mm), compared with 18.89 in (480 mm) on the STA-38, and Z travel on the shortest bed is 45.28 in (1150 mm). What it costs is clearance over the carriage. Swing over the cross slide is 21.26 in (540 mm), less than the 23.62 in (600 mm) of the lighter machine, so a long part that has to pass over the slide is limited to a smaller diameter here.
Six beds are offered, from 59.06 in (1,500 mm) between centers to 236.22 in (6,000 mm). The Z-axis servo is 5.3 hp on the three shorter beds and 9.3 hp from the STB-38160 up. Only the 6 in (152 mm) spindle bore is listed at this swing, driven by a 30 hp motor with 40 hp or 50 hp as options.
Plan the floor before ordering. Every length is 122.0 in (3,100 mm) wide and 89.4 in (2,270 mm) high, and overall length with the chip conveyor runs from 229.0 in (5,816 mm) to 406.1 in (10,316 mm).

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Both swing 37.79 in (960 mm) and carry a 6 in (152 mm) bore. The STB-38 has a 31.89 in (810 mm) wide bed, 23.62 in (600 mm) of X travel and a machine width of 122.0 in (3,100 mm). The STA-38 has a 24 in (610 mm) bed, 18.89 in (480 mm) of X travel and a width of 107.7 in (2,735 mm). Swing over the cross slide is smaller on the STB-38, 21.26 in (540 mm), where the STA-38 clears 23.62 in (600 mm).
02
Distance between centers is 59.06 in (1,500 mm), 78.74 in (2,000 mm), 118.11 in (3,000 mm), 157.48 in (4,000 mm), 196.85 in (5,000 mm) or 236.22 in (6,000 mm) depending on the bed. Z-axis travel is shorter than each of those: 45.28 in (1150 mm) on the STB-3860 and 222.44 in (5650 mm) on the STB-38240.
03
Sharp's standard accessory list names a manual tailstock, MT 6. A tailstock with hydraulic quill and a tailstock base with hydraulic lock bolt are listed as optional accessories, so specify them if the work calls for powered clamping.
04
The STB-3860 weighs 28,600 lb (13,000 kg) and the STB-38240 weighs 40,500 lb (18,400 kg). The steps between are 30,000 lb (13,600 kg), 32,600 lb (14,800 kg), 35,200 lb (16,000 kg) and 37,900 lb (17,200 kg) as the bed gets longer.
