How much does the Sharp STA-38 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STA-38 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Sharp STA-38 is the entry size of Sharp's big bore flat bed CNC lathes: 37.79 in (960 mm) of swing over a 24 in (610 mm) wide bed, a 6 in (152 mm) spindle bore and a 30 hp spindle motor under a FANUC Oi-TF control. Six bed lengths are listed, from the STA-3860 at 59.06 in (1,500 mm) between centers to the STA-38240 at 236.22 in (6,000 mm).
Bore is what sets this size apart from the rest of the STA range. The larger swings are offered with a choice of bores; for the STA-38 Sharp states that the spindle bore size is available in 6". Pipe and bar up to that diameter pass through the headstock, and a rear chuck adapter is available so that a second chuck can grip the tail of a long piece behind the spindle.
Read the travel rows with care. Z-axis travel is shorter than the center distance on every length: 41.34 in (1,050 mm) on the STA-3860 and 218.5 in (5,550 mm) on the STA-38240. The carriage cannot reach the full length between centers, so compare the turned length of the part, not its overall length, with the Z figure. X travel is 18.89 in (480 mm), and Sharp notes that it varies with the turret installed.
The three shortest beds use a 5.5 hp (4.10 kW) Z-axis servo motor and the three longest a 9.3 hp one. Weight runs from 24,400 lb (11,068 kg) to 34,400 lb (15,604 kg), and length with chip conveyor from 208.5 in (5,295 mm) to 385.6 in (9,795 mm). The bed and base are a single casting.
