Overview

Look at the minimum before the maximum on the Sharp STC-44. This extra heavy duty big bore CNC lathe swings 44.09 in (1120 mm) and cuts rolls up to 38.19 in (970 mm), but its minimum roll cutting diameter is 12.60 in (320 mm). Below that the tool does not reach the work in the standard arrangement, so a shop that also turns slender shafts needs another machine for them, or a different tool post.

The reason is the short cross stroke: 15.75 in (400 mm) of X-axis travel on a carriage built to stand well back from the spindle line. Sharp lists a choice of optional tool posts for the cross slide, in 4 way, 6 way, 8 and 12 position forms, hydraulic or motorized.

From this size up the table offers five spindle bores, 6 in (152 mm), 9 in (230 mm), 10 in (255 mm), 12 in (305 mm) and 15 in (380 mm). A rear chuck adapter is on the option list for holding the tail of a pipe.

The structure is the STC one: a 49.21 in (1250 mm) bed, bed and base in one casting, and separate bedways for the cross slide and the tailstock. Weight is 35,200 lb (16,000 kg) for the 78.74 in (2,000 mm) bed and 48,500 lb (22,000 kg) for the 196.85 in (5,000 mm) one. The machine is 150.4 in (3,820 mm) wide and 89.0 in (2,260 mm) high.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the smallest diameter the STC-44 can turn?

The table gives a minimum roll cutting diameter of 12.60 in (320 mm) and a maximum of 38.19 in (970 mm). On the STC-38 the same rows read 4.72 in (120 mm) and 32.68 in (830 mm), so the range moves up with the swing while X travel stays at 15.75 in (400 mm).

02 How wide is the STC-44?

150.4 in (3,820 mm), on a bed that is 49.21 in (1250 mm) wide. Length with the chip conveyor runs from 242.1 in (6,150 mm) to 360.2 in (9,150 mm) across the four bed lengths, and height is 89.0 in (2,260 mm).

03 Which bed lengths are listed for the STC-44?

Four. Distance between centers, maximum cutting length and Z-axis travel are all 78.74 in (2,000 mm) on the STC-4480, 118.11 in (3,000 mm) on the STC-44120, 157.48 in (4,000 mm) on the STC-44160 and 196.85 in (5,000 mm) on the STC-44200.

04 What is the tailstock arrangement on the STC-44?

The tailstock travels on its own bedways, separate from those of the cross slide. Sharp's accessory list offers a tailstock base with hydraulic lock bolt as an option, and the feature text says a hydraulic tailstock lock along the bed is optional.
