Sharp STF-44 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Sharp STF-44 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Sharp or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Sharp STF-44 is a facing lathe: a big bore CNC lathe with a short bed and, as Sharp's own bullet puts it, no tailstock. Swing over the bed is 44.09 in (1120 mm), Z-axis travel is 39.37 in (1000 mm), and the whole bed is 128.54 in (3265 mm) long.

Everything is held in the chuck. That suits flanges, rings, hubs, valve bodies and pipe ends, parts whose diameter is large and whose length is modest, and it is the wrong layout for a shaft that needs support at the far end. The headstock is the same three-point design used on Sharp's long-bed big bore machines, with one ball bearing and two tapered roller bearings on the spindle, and the 6" bore is standard with 9", 10", 12" and 15" optional.

Cross travel is generous for the swing. X-axis travel is 21.65 in (550 mm), close to half of 44.09 in, so a facing cut from the bore outwards covers most of the radius. Swing over the cross slide is 23.62 in (600 mm).

Leaving out the long bed saves weight and floor. The STF-44 weighs 20,500 lb (9,300 kg); the STB-44, which has the same swing and nearly the same bed width, starts at 30,800 lb (14,000 kg). Width is 98.82 in (2,510 mm) and height 83.27 in (2,115 mm).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 21.65 in (550 mm) of X travel on a 44.09 in (1120 mm) swing
  • Short 128.54 in (3265 mm) bed keeps the machine at 20,500 lb (9,300 kg)
  • Spindle bore 6" standard, 9", 10", 12" and 15" optional
  • 31.88 in (810 mm) bed with 2 V, 2 Flat Ways
  • 30 hp spindle motor with M code 4 step auto change speeds

Limitations

  • It has no tailstock, so long work cannot be supported between centers
  • Z-axis travel is limited to 39.37 in (1000 mm)
  • Swing over the cross slide is 23.62 in (600 mm)
  • Turrets and chucks are optional accessories

Best For

Flanges, rings and hubs up to 44.09 in swing Pipe ends and couplings held in the chuck Facing and boring of short, large-diameter parts Shops without floor space for a long-bed big bore lathe

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the STF-44 designed for?

Chucking work of large diameter and short length. Sharp states that it has no tailstock, and the table gives 39.37 in (1000 mm) of Z-axis travel with 21.65 in (550 mm) of X-axis travel under a 44.09 in (1120 mm) swing.

02 How does the STF-44 compare with the STB-44?

Both swing 44.09 in (1120 mm). The STB-44 is a between-centers lathe sold in six bed lengths and weighing 30,800 lb (14,000 kg) or more, with 23.62 in (600 mm) of X travel. The STF-44 is a single short machine of 20,500 lb (9,300 kg) with 21.65 in (550 mm) of X travel and no tailstock.

03 Which spindle bores can the STF-44 have?

Sharp lists the 6" bore as standard and 9", 10", 12" and 15" as optional; in the table these are 6 in, 9 in, 10 in, 12 in and 15 in, or 152 mm, 230 mm, 255 mm, 305 mm and 380 mm. Double chucks are available as options, with a rear chuck adapter on the accessory list.

04 How much floor space does the STF-44 take?

The table gives a width of 98.82 in (2,510 mm) and a height of 83.27 in (2,115 mm), on a bed 128.54 in (3265 mm) long. Sharp's overall length row prints inch and metric figures that do not agree, so ask for the footprint drawing. Weight is 20,500 lb (9,300 kg).
