Overview

The ROMI VTL 500R is a vertical turning center for chucked parts up to 500 mm (20 in) in diameter, with the spindle pointing up and a 12-station turret for fixed tools above it. Romi lists it in one column with the VTL 500L and gives the two identical figures. On a vertical lathe gravity seats the part in the chuck, which is why this layout is chosen for discs, hubs, flywheels and brake components that are awkward to load horizontally.

The turning figures need reading with care. Maximum turning diameter is 500 mm (20 in), but the recommended figure is 390 mm (15.4 in), and a part of up to 740 mm (29 in) can swing. The door opens 640 mm (25 in), and Romi warns that parts as large as the door opening are difficult to load. Turning height is 668 mm (26 in), the tallest of the four VTL models, because the fixed-tool turret is more compact than the driven one.

The A2-8” spindle runs from 2 to 2,500 rpm on a 28 hp / 21 kW motor and gives 624 Nm (460 lb-ft). It carries a 315 or 390 mm (12.4 or 15.4 in) chuck, and with the 390 mm chuck speed is held to 2,400 rpm. The chuck may be loaded with 590 kg (1,300 lbs).

This size runs on linear roller guides, so X and Z rapid at 30 m/min (1,181 in/min); the larger VTL 700R uses square guides and moves at 20 m/min (787 in/min). Travels are 325 mm (12.8 in) in X and 700 mm (28 in) in Z. The footprint is small for the part size, 1.7 x 2.3 m (67 x 91 in) without chip conveyor, though the machine stands 3.4 m (134 in) tall. Weight is 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs) and the control a Siemens Sinumerik 828D.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Vertical spindle seats heavy chucked parts by gravity; chuck load up to 590 kg (1,300 lbs)
  • Turning height of 668 mm (26 in), the most in the VTL range
  • Rapids of 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) on linear roller guides
  • Floor space of only 1.7 x 2.3 m (67 x 91 in) without chip conveyor
  • 624 Nm (460 lb-ft) from a 28 hp / 21 kW main motor

Limitations

  • Fixed tools only; driven tools need the VTL 500MR
  • Recommended turning diameter is 390 mm (15.4 in), below the 500 mm (20 in) maximum
  • Door opening of 640 mm (25 in) is narrower than the 740 mm (29 in) swing
  • Needs 3.4 m (134 in) of headroom

Best For

Discs, hubs and flanges up to 500 mm (20 in) Brake drums, flywheels and similar castings Production cells where floor space is tight

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size parts does the ROMI VTL 500R turn?

Maximum turning diameter is 500 mm (20 in), with 390 mm (15.4 in) recommended, and maximum turning height is 668 mm (26 in). The largest diameter that can swing is 740 mm (29 in). The chuck is 315 or 390 mm (12.4 or 15.4 in) and can carry 590 kg (1,300 lbs).

02 What is the difference between the VTL 500R and the VTL 500MR?

The VTL 500R has a T type turret with a Romi disc for 12 fixed tools. The VTL 500MR has a BMT 65 turret for fixed and driven tools, and its turning height is 620 mm (24 in) against 668 mm (26 in). Spindle, travels and footprint are the same.

03 How fast is the VTL 500R spindle?

The speed range is 2 to 2,500 rpm on an A2-8” spindle driven by a 28 hp / 21 kW motor (S2 - 30 min. rating). A catalogue note limits speed to 2,400 rpm with the Ø 390 mm (15.4”) chuck. Torque on the power graph is 624 Nm (460 lb-ft).

04 How much room does the VTL 500R need?

Floor space is 1.7 x 2.3 m (67 x 91 in) without a chip conveyor and maximum machine height is 3.4 m (134 in). Net weight is 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs) and total installed power is 30 kVA.
