Price estimate
We do not have a price for the ROMI GL 450 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
At 490 mm (19.3 in) of cutting diameter in the T version, the ROMI GL 450 is the largest turning center in the GL New Generation range. It shares its bed with the GL 350, so Z travel is 1,200 mm (47.2 in) and the swings are identical, but the spindle motor, the turret and the tailstock are all a size heavier.
The built-in motor is rated 40.8 hp / 30 kW. Headstocks are the same two as on the GL 350: A2-8” at 3,000 rpm with a 104 mm (4.1 in) bore, or A2-11” at 2,500 rpm with a 116 mm (4.56 in) bore and chucks of 315, 390 or 450 mm (12.4, 15.3 or 17.7 in). More power through the same spindle means the gain is in depth of cut on large diameters, not in speed.
What sets the turret apart is its size. The driven-tool versions carry a BMT 75 disc with ER-40 collets that hold Ø3 - Ø26mm tools, and the live-tool motor is rated at a minimum of 40 Nm (29.5 lb-ft). Boring bars go up to Ø 50 mm (2”). M and Y versions turn 450 mm (17.7 in), and X travel is 255 mm (10 in). Y travel on the Y version is ± 75 mm (3 in).
Heavy shafts need a firm centre. The servodriven tailstock has a built-in live centre and pushes with up to 1,000 kgf, the highest figure in the series. Is a second spindle available? No: S versions are listed only for the two small sizes. Plan for 50 kVA, 7,700 kg (16,975 lb) without chip conveyor and 4,390 x 2,523 mm (172.8 x 99.3 in) of floor for a Y version.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 40.8 hp / 30 kW built-in motor spindle, the most powerful in the GL range
- BMT 75 turret with ER-40 driven tool holders and a 40 Nm (29.5 lb-ft) minimum motor torque
- Tailstock axial force up to 1,000 kgf with a built-in live centre
- Cutting diameter of 490 mm (19.3 in) on the T version and 450 mm (17.7 in) with driven tools
- Boring bars up to Ø 50 mm (2”)
Limitations
- Same 1,200 mm (47.2 in) Z travel as the GL 350; the extra capacity is in diameter only
- Top spindle speed is 3,000 rpm with A2-8” and 2,500 rpm with A2-11”
- No second-headstock version is listed
- Y versions occupy 4,390 x 2,523 mm (172.8 x 99.3 in) without the chip conveyor

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The T version, with fixed tools, cuts up to 490 mm (19.3 in). The M and Y versions, with driven tools, cut up to 450 mm (17.7 in). Swing over the Z axis cover is 660 mm (26 in) and over the X table 530 mm (20.8 in).
02
The bed and travels are shared. The GL 450 has a 40.8 hp / 30 kW main motor where the GL 350 has 34 hp / 25 kW, a BMT 75 turret where the GL 350 has BMT 65, and a tailstock force of 1,000 kgf where the GL 350 has 700 kgf. It weighs 7,700 kg (16,975 lb) without chip conveyor.
03
With the A2-8” headstock, 76 or 89 mm (3 or 3.5 in). With the A2-11” headstock, 89 or 102 mm (3.5 or 4 in). The spindle bores are 104 mm (4.1 in) and 116 mm (4.56 in). The actual capacity depends on the hydraulic cylinder and draw bar ordered.
04
Total installed power is 50 kVA. Romi states that the electrical installation is available for 400 Vca at 50 / 60 Hz and lists an autotransformer as an option for other voltages. Coolant pumps of 5, 7, 15 or 30 bar are available.
