Overview

Gears arrive in the C Series with the ROMI C 680. Below it the lathes are belt driven; this one has a two-range geared headstock behind a 45 hp / 33.6 kW motor, and it is the smallest model in the range sold in beds of 2.0 / 3.0 m (79 / 118 in) between centers.

The gearbox changes what the machine can cut. With the A2-8” headstock, range I runs from 1 to 452 rpm and delivers 2,520 Nm (1,859 lb-ft). Range II reaches 1,800 rpm with 630 Nm (465 lb-ft). Heavy roughing of a forged shaft happens in the low range; finishing passes and smaller diameters use the high one. The gears and shafts are hardened and ground, and oil is recirculated through the headstock.

There is a second headstock for hollow work. The A2-11” version opens the spindle hole from 104 mm (4.1 in) to 172 mm (6.77 in), and its low range covers 1 to 250 rpm. Pipe and casing sections that will not enter the smaller spindle are the reason to order it.

Swing over the bed is 680 mm (27 in) and over the cross slide 430 mm (16.9 in), so a shaft of real diameter still clears the carriage. X travel is 360 mm (14.2 in), and Z travel 2,025 / 3,025 mm (80 / 119 in). The tailstock is dragged into place through the table instead of being pushed by hand, and it carries a 130 mm (5.1 in) quill.

Turret options match the C 620: 8 stations horizontal, 4 stations vertical, or an 8-station VDI - 40 turret for driven tools. The 3.0 m machine weighs about 7,000 kg (15,400 lbs) and needs 7.70 x 2.43 m (303 x 96 in) of floor. Control is by Siemens Sinumerik 828D, with electronic handwheels on the panel.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Geared headstock with 2,520 Nm (1,859 lb-ft) in range I on the A2-8” version
  • Optional A2-11” headstock with a 172 mm (6.77 in) spindle hole
  • 45 hp / 33.6 kW main motor, the same power as the two largest C Series lathes
  • Tailstock positioned by drag through the table as listed, with a 130 mm (5.1 in) quill
  • Beds of 2.0 / 3.0 m (79 / 118 in) between centers

Limitations

  • Cross slide travel stays at 360 mm (14.2 in), the same as the C 620
  • Range II on the A2-8” headstock gives 630 Nm (465 lb-ft), a quarter of the low-range torque
  • Rapids of 8 m/min (315 in/min) over up to 3,025 mm of Z travel make for long repositioning moves
  • The 3.0 m version needs 7.70 x 2.43 m (303 x 96 in) of floor without a chip conveyor

Best For

Roughing forged and cast shafts up to 3.0 m between centers Pipe and casing work through the 172 mm (6.77 in) hole of the A2-11” headstock Rolls, axles and hydraulic cylinder rods Shops that need low-speed torque more than spindle speed
