Price estimate
We do not have a price for the TOS Kuřim SKDY-D that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The TOS Kuřim SKDY-D is a vertical lathe with a Y axis. Its gantry moves, giving Y travel of 3,000/5,000 mm (118.1/196.9 in) in addition to the X, Z and W motions of a conventional vertical lathe. Clamping plates are 3,000/4,000/5,000 mm (118.1/157.5/196.9 in).
On a plain vertical lathe the tool lives on one radial line and every feature must be brought to it by turning the plate. A Y axis frees the tool from that line. Bolt circles, pads, keyways and pockets anywhere on the part can be milled and drilled with the plate indexed or stopped, the way a gantry machining centre would do it. That is why the feature list reads "movable gantry, movable cross-rail" and why the milling heads are exchanged automatically here.
As a lathe, it matches the SKD-D class. Maximum machining diameter is 4,000/5,000/6,000 mm (157.5/196.9/236.2 in), machining height 2,000/2,800 mm (78.7/110.2 in), plate speed 125 - 60 rpm and cutting force 40 kN. Workpiece weight is 30,000 - 100,000 kg (66,138 - 220,459 lb), rising with plate size.
X travel is 5,000 - 7,000 mm (196.9 - 275.6 in). The ram, 340 x 340 mm (13.4 x 13.4 in), extends 2,000/2,500 mm (78.7/98.4 in) and the cross-rail strokes 1,500/2,000 mm (59.1/78.7 in). Z runs on sliding guideways; X, Y and W on linear profile guides.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Y axis travel of 3,000/5,000 mm (118.1/196.9 in) from the movable gantry
- Automatic exchange of tool holders and milling heads
- Three plate sizes, 3,000/4,000/5,000 mm (118.1/157.5/196.9 in), with machining diameters to match
- Linear profile guideways on X, Y and W
- Ram with a built-in milling spindle available as an option
Limitations
- Cutting force of 40 kN; the SKDY-E lists 100 kN
- Machining height limited to 2,000/2,800 mm (78.7/110.2 in)
- Y travel is offered as 3,000 or 5,000 mm only
- A moving gantry lengthens the installation compared with the SKD-D, and the catalogue gives no footprint

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A Y axis. The SKDY-D table has a row for Y axis travel, 3,000/5,000 mm (118.1/196.9 in), that the SKD table lacks, and the feature list describes a movable gantry. The tool can therefore be positioned off the radial line of the plate for milling and drilling.
02
Clamping plates of 3,000/4,000/5,000 mm (118.1/157.5/196.9 in) with maximum machining diameters of 4,000/5,000/6,000 mm (157.5/196.9/236.2 in). Machining height is 2,000/2,800 mm (78.7/110.2 in) and workpiece weight 30,000 - 100,000 kg (66,138 - 220,459 lb).
03
The SKDY-D (movable table) is a smaller, faster variant: plates of 2,500/3,000/4,000/4,500 mm (98.4/118.1/157.5/177.2 in), plate speed of 250 - 80 rpm and workpieces of 30,000 - 70,000 kg (66,138 - 154,321 lb). As its name says, the table moves.
04
The Z axis guideways are sliding. The X, Y and W axis guideways are linear profile. The heavier SKDY-E is hydrostatic on all of them.
