Overview

The ROMI GL 250 is the entry size of the GL New Generation turning centers, a slant-bed machine on linear guides with a built-in spindle motor rated 19.4 hp / 14.3 kW. It turns up to 282 mm (11 in) in the fixed-tool T version and 250 mm (9.8 in) in the M, Y and S versions, with 600 mm (23.6 in) of Z travel.

Romi sells the same casting in four versions and the letter matters more than the number. T is a 12-station turret for fixed tools on a Romi disc. M adds driven tools on a VDI 30 disc. Y carries a BMT-45 turret with ± 50 mm (1.97 in) of Y travel. S adds a second headstock with an A2-5” nose, a 61 mm bore and 6,000 rpm, so a part can be finished on both ends in one cycle.

There are two main spindles as well. The A2-5” headstock reaches 6,000 rpm with a 61 mm (2.4 in) bore and takes 42 or 51 mm (1.65 or 2 in) bar. The A2-6” headstock is limited to 4,500 rpm but has a 73 mm (2.9 in) bore for 51 or 64 mm (2 or 2.5 in) bar. Driven tools run from 0 ~ 6,000 rpm, which is the highest live-tool speed in the GL range and suits small drills and end mills.

Rapid traverse is 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) in X and Z and 18 m/min (708 in/min) in Y. The tailstock of the T, M and Y versions is servodriven with an MT-4 centre and up to 300 kgf of axial force set from the CNC. The control is a Fanuc 0i-TF Plus i-HMI, or a Fanuc 32i-B Plus i-HMI on S versions. Weight is 4,800 kg (10,582 lb) without chip conveyor, and the S versions need 45 kVA instead of 30 kVA.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What do the T, M, Y and S versions of the ROMI GL 250 mean?

They describe the turret and spindle arrangement. T has a 12-station turret for fixed tools with a Romi disc. M has driven tools on a VDI 30 disc. Y has a BMT-45 turret with ± 50 mm (1.97 in) of Y-axis travel. S versions add a second headstock with a built-in motor and an A2-5” nose.

02 What bar capacity does the GL 250 have?

It depends on the headstock and the cylinder. With the A2-5” spindle, which has a 61 mm (2.4 in) bore, bar capacity is 42 or 51 mm (1.65 or 2 in). With the A2-6” spindle and its 73 mm (2.9 in) bore it is 51 or 64 mm (2 or 2.5 in). The second headstock of S versions takes 51 mm (2 in).

03 How fast is the GL 250 spindle?

The A2-5” headstock runs to 6,000 rpm and the A2-6” headstock to 4,500 rpm. Both are built-in motor spindles rated 19.4 hp / 14.3 kW in intermittent regime. The second headstock on S versions also reaches 6,000 rpm.

04 Which CNC does the GL 250 use?

T, M and Y versions use a Fanuc 0i-TF Plus i-HMI with a touchscreen monitor. S versions, which have to coordinate two spindles, use a Fanuc 32i-B Plus i-HMI. Romi lists an integrated safety system with both.
