Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Palmary OCD-2040 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Palmary OCD-2040 is the smallest machine in the OCD line of CNC cylindrical grinders: Ø220 mm (8.7 in) swing over the table, 400 mm (15.7 in) between centers and a maximum ground diameter of Ø200 mm (7.9 in). Work between centers is limited to 60 kg (132 lb), so this is a machine for small shafts, pins and tooling rather than for heavy rolls.
Everything about it is scaled to that job. The wheel is Ø355 mm with a 127 mm bore, 38 to 50 mm wide, driven by a 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) motor at 33 m/s (6,496 ft/min). Wheelhead travel is 170 mm (6.7 in) and the table moves 560 mm (22.0 in), both at 10 m/min (394 ipm) in rapid. Centers are No. 3 Morse taper at both ends, and the work spindle runs from 10 to 300 rpm.
Resolution is the notable figure. The wheelhead row gives a minimum setting unit of 0.0001 mm, and a linear scale on the X axis is in the standard accessories, so diameter control does not depend on the ballscrew alone. The wheel spindle runs in hybrid hydro-static bearings, which Palmary describes as free of metal-to-metal contact.
A FANUC CNC controller and a fully enclosed splash guard are standard. Internal grinding is an option, with a 0.37 kW (0.5 hp) spindle, and so are an air cylinder tailstock, steady rests, a touch probe gauge and an in-process gauge. The workhead swivels from -30° to +90° and the table from -3° to +10° for tapers. At 2,350 kg (5,181 lb) it is also the lightest OCD model.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 0.0001 mm minimum setting unit on the wheelhead axis, with a linear scale for X in the standard accessories
- Compact for its class at 2,350 kg (5,181 lb), with a 120 L (31.7 gal) coolant tank
- Workhead swivels from -30° to +90° and the table from -3° to +10°, so tapers and faces can be ground in one setup
- Hybrid hydro-static wheel spindle bearings, described by Palmary as avoiding metal-to-metal contact and vibration
- FANUC CNC controller and fully enclosed splash guard are standard accessories
Limitations
- Only 60 kg (132 lb) between centers and 15 kg (33 lb) on the work spindle with a 100 mm maximum overhang
- 400 mm (15.7 in) between centers is the only length offered at this swing
- Internal grinding is an option, and its spindle is rated just 0.37 kW (0.5 hp)
- The 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) wheel motor and 38 to 50 mm wheel width limit stock removal on wide plunge cuts

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Up to Ø200 mm (7.9 in) in ground diameter and 400 mm (15.7 in) between centers, with Ø220 mm (8.7 in) of swing over the table. The weight limit between centers is 60 kg (132 lb). A part held on the work spindle alone is limited to 15 kg (33 lb) including the holder, at no more than 100 mm of length.
02
A Ø355 mm wheel with a 127 mm bore, in widths from 38 to 50 mm. Peripheral speed is 33 m/s (6,496 ft/min) and the wheel spindle motor is 3.7 kW (5.0 hp). A grinding wheel and flange are in the standard accessories; a spare wheel and flange are optional.
03
Only with the optional internal grinding attachment. The table lists a 0.37 kW (0.5 hp) internal grinding wheel spindle for it. Palmary says the work spindle head is built for external grinding, optional internal diameter grinding and face grinding, and the head swivels from -30° to +90°.
04
Both have 400 mm (15.7 in) between centers. The OCD-3240 swings Ø320 mm (12.6 in), carries 150 kg (331 lb) between centers and has a 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) wheel motor. The OCD-2040 swings Ø220 mm (8.7 in), carries 60 kg (132 lb) on No. 3 Morse taper centers and weighs 2,350 kg (5,181 lb).
